Whitmore, Fever hold off Monarchs
Aug 6, 2007 - 1:23 AM INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Tamika Whitmore scored 16 points off the bench as the shorthanded Indiana Fever posted a 63-55 victory over the Sacramento Monarchs on Sunday.With the win, Indiana improved to just 2-6 without All-Star forward Tamika Catchings, who was sidelined with a partial tear of her left plantar fascia on July 20 during a loss to Detroit.
Tan White's jumper in the second quarter helped Indiana create a 32-19 advantage with 5:22 remaining. The Fever held a 40-22 edge at halftime.
Late in the final period, Chelsea Newton's 3-pointer capped an impressive 8-0 run as the Monarchs cut the deficit 60-55 at the 1:17 mark. But White scored on a wide-open layup with 26 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Yolanda Griffith had 11 points and nine rebounds and Rebekkah Brunson grabbed a career-high 13 boards for Sacramento, which shot 30 percent (21-of-70) from the field.
