Shock hold off Fever for home-court advantage in playoffs
Aug 11, 2007 - 8:58 PM AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Half of Deanna Nolan's 26 points came in the third quarter as she paced the Detroit Shock to a 74-69 victory over the Indiana Fever on Saturday.With the win, the defending WNBA champion Shock clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
Down 41-31 at halftime, Nolan's 5-for-5 performance from the floor in the third spurred a 14-3 run that gave Detroit its first lead in the game at 47-46 with 5:32 remaining. Nolan had seven points during the 16-5 spurt, finishing it off with a 3-point play.
Nolan also pulled down 10 rebounds, and Katie Smith scored 15, including a 3-point play in the midst of a late 10-2 spurt that helped the Shock to a nine-point lead heading into the fourth, 59-50.
The Fever, held to 2-for-13 from the floor in the third, rallied in the fourth behind Tan White.
White scored 13 points in a 15-3 run that brought Indiana within a point late in the game. She hit a reverse layup with 5:09 left in the fourth, sunk three 3-pointers and made it 70-69 on a jumper with 41 seconds remaining.
She fell short of completing the rally when she missed a 3-point attempt with five seconds remaining that could have given the Fever the lead.
White finished with 15 points to lead Indiana (19-12), who fell to 3-7 without leading scorer and rebounder Tamika Catchings, who is sidelined with a left foot injury.
Tammy Sutton-Brown, who fouled out with 1:16 remaining in the game, netted 13 for the Fever.
