Perkins, Sky eliminated from playoffs despite win

Aug 15, 2007 - 2:43 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Sky finally picked up a victory on Tuesday. It turned out to be a meaningless one.

Jia Perkins scored 24 points and Stacey Dales added 17 as the Chicago Sky secured a 77-65 victory over the New York Liberty on the night they were eliminated from playoff contention.

Candice Dupree netted 16 points for the Sky (13-19), who snapped a five-game losing streak, picking up their first win since July 26 at Detroit. But it was all for naught. Also Tuesday, the Washington Mystics (15-17) held on for an exciting 65-64 victory over the Connecticut Sun to end the Sky's hopes for a possible playoff berth. The Liberty (13-18), meanwhile, remained two games back of the eighth and final playoff spot with three contests left.

Perkins shot 11-of-19 from the field, and Dales was 5-of-14, including 5-of-12 from the arc, for Chicago, which shot 44 percent (30-of-68).

Sky center Chasity Melvin had her left eye poked out of the socket with 4:59 left in the first quarter. She walked to an ambulance under her own power, which then carted her to the Illinois-Chicago Medical Center.

Jessica Davenport had 14 points in 16 minutes off the bench for the Liberty, who committed 20 turnovers.
