BoSox use eight-run second to rout Yanks

Sep 28, 2014 - 6:21 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Daniel Nava collected three hits and drove in three runs as Boston routed New York, 10-4, in the middle test of a season- ending three-game set from Fenway Park.

Yoenis Cespedes added two hits and two RBI, while Rusney Castillo picked up three hits, drove in a run and scored once for the Red Sox. Garin Cecchini doubled twice, scored a run and drove in one for the hosts, who cruised to victory thanks to an eight-run second.

Backed by his prolific offense, Joe Kelly (4-2) allowed four runs on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings, but it was enough to snag the win.

"For any guy in the rotation, the ability to log innings is a primary goal," said Farrell of Kelly, who has been solid since arriving from St. Louis. "His efficiency is because he's been able to pitch with his fastball and get some ground-ball outs."

Stephen Drew hit a two-run double, while Chris Young and Brendan Ryan added an RBI each for the Yankees. Derek Jeter finished with an infield single in two at-bats as the designated hitter in what could have been his final MLB appearance. He did not play in Friday's opener and could sit out Sunday.

"Whatever he tells me," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi of Jeter's status. "He told me two at-bats today, so that's what I did."

New York starter Masahiro Tanaka (13-5) was pulled in the second having surrendered seven hits and seven runs -- five earned. Tanaka was making his second start since returning from a two-month layoff because of an elbow injury.

Already up 1-0, Boston broke open the game and chased Tanaka with a eight-run burst in its second turn at the plate.

Castillo walked and stole second before coming in two batters later on a Christian Vazquez two-out hit. Mookie Betts walked and Xander Bogaerts singled off the glove of Ryan at third base before Nava was credited with a base hit off the glove of first baseman Chase Headley. Two runs scored on Nava's hit and Cespedes followed with another single that made it 5-0 and brought on Preston Claiborne.

Yanks center fielder Eury Perez then botched a drive from Craig, which brought in Nava and Cespedes, then Craig -- who took second on the error -- crossed home when Cecchini cracked a double to left. Castillo's single then scored Cecchini for a 9-0 game, and though Bryce Brentz singled and Vazquez walked to load the bases, Betts grounded into a fielder's choice to end the rally.

Bogaerts doubled to start the sixth and scored on a Nava hit for the hosts' 10th run of the contest.

New York hit the scoreboard in the seventh, when Jose Pirela tripled with one down and scored on Ryan's fly to left, then put three more on the board in the following frame.

Kelly was forced out with one away in the eighth after giving up an RBI single to Young that re-loaded the bases. Tommy Layne then surrendered a two-run, ground-rule double to Drew but Rubby De La Rosa retired the next two batters to keep it at 10-4.

"I had a 10-run lead, but at the end of the day, it's something I've got to do better," said Kelly of failing to leave the game under better circumstances. "I wanted to throw a complete game really, really bad."

De La Rosa then left a runner on second in the ninth, closing out the contest by fanning Headley.

Betts began the home first with a double, moved up on a one-out single from Nava and scored on a Cespedes base hit.
