Jeter expected back in lineup against Boston

Sep 27, 2014 - 1:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Jeter had the night off in the series opener with the Boston Red Sox and is expected to be back in the lineup Saturday as the designated hitter for the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.

Jeter rested in Friday's 3-2 win over the Red Sox after a whirlwind celebration in the Bronx the night before. Now he will play in the penultimate game of his Hall of Fame career and is ready for the rival Red Sox.

"I'm playing here out of respect for this rivalry and the Boston fans," Jeter said. "If it were anywhere else, I don't know if I'd play."

Jeter, of course, was the hero in Thursday's victory over Baltimore and hit a walk-off single in his Yankee Stadium sendoff. Jeter will tie Yankees legend Mickey Mantle (152) for the most games played by a Yankee (including the postseason) at Fenway Park.

The Yankees didn't need Jeter in Friday's win, as John Ryan Murphy scored what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Zelous Wheeler. Francisco Cervelli had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Yankees, whose lineup came through despite unfamiliar names.

Chris Capuano picked up the win and gave up only an unearned run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

"Early it was a little shaky with the command," Capuano remarked. "(I had) a really kind of bad bullpen before the game. But the defense helped me out on a couple hard-hit balls and I was able to kind of settle into a rhythm."

David Robertson worked around a hit in the ninth and struck out two batters for his 39th save.

New York has won seven of its last 10 games.

Masahiro Tanaka will be on a pitch count when he takes the mound Saturday for the Yankees. Tanaka returned from a balky elbow in Sunday's 5-2 win over Toronto and allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings. It was his first appearance since July 8 at Cleveland.

Tanaka, a right-hander, is 7-2 in nine road assignments and 1-1 with a 2.20 ERA in two career starts against the Red Sox. Tanaka went the distance in a 2-1 loss to the Red Sox on June 28, charged with two runs and seven hits with eight K's and one walk. Mike Napoli hit a home run in the ninth to win it.

The defending World Series champion Red Sox are almost finished with this disappointing season and had won three of four games prior to Friday's loss.

Steven Wright was saddled with the loss in the start, charged with two unearned runs and four hits in five innings.

Rusney Castillo homered and had two of Boston's six hits.

"I'm starting to fall into a little bit more of a routine, so from a physical standpoint I'm getting closer to where I want to be," said Castillo, who went deep for a second straight game and signed with the Red Sox in late August.

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz sat out a third straight day with inflammation in his wrist, and could be done for the season. Ortiz has a .263 batting average with 35 home runs and 104 RBI.

Joe Kelly will make his 10th start for the Red Sox Saturday and is 3-2 with a 4.00 ERA in nine appearances after coming over in a trade with St. Louis. Kelly has won two straight and three of four starts, and lasted seven innings in Sunday's 3-2 win at Baltimore. He allowed three hits and two runs.

Kelly faced the Yankees for the first time in his career Sept. 2 in the Bronx and defeated the hosts in a 9-4 decision. Kelly was reached for three runs and five hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 6 2/3 innings.

The right-hander has walked at least two batters in nine straight games.

The Yankees are 11-6 versus the Red Sox this season.
