Braves take down Padres
Jun 11, 2015 - 4:50 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Williams Perez tossed seven solid innings and the Atlanta Braves downed the San Diego Padres 4-1 on Wednesday.Perez (2-0) scattered four hits and two walks in picking up career win No. 2 in his fifth career start. He was charged with one unearned run and watched his offense knocked around San Diego's pitching staff for 14 singles.
"It was a well played baseball game," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "(Perez) gave us a great opportunity to win the ball game and we converted."
Kelly Johnson went 3-for-4 and drove in a run in his first game in nearly a month, and Cameron Maybin added two hits and an RBI in the win, the Braves' second straight in this four-game series.
Tyson Ross (3-6) allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings for San Diego, which has dropped three of four on the heels of a promising four-game winning streak.
Cory Spangenberg recorded two doubles for the only extra-base hits of the night and finished 3-for-4 with an RBI in defeat.
Johnson, who was sidelined with an oblique injury, opened the scoring by plating Nick Markakis with a single down the left-field line in the second inning. Andrelton Simmons blooped one into short right later in the frame and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double but not before another runner crossed the plate.
Ross loaded the bases with no outs in the third and limited the damage to one run on Freddie Freeman's double-play ground ball.
Ross helped his cause with a leadoff single in the fifth, advanced on a throwing error and scored on Spangenberg's double to the warning track in left.
The Padres' bullpen, which had given up one run in 25 straight innings, gave the run back in the seventh, however. Shawn Kelley loaded the bases with no outs, and Maybin smacked a sharp single to right for a 4-1 lead.
"They didn't hit the ball real hard," San Diego manager Bud Black said. "They just hit the ball in the right spots.
Brandon Cunniff and Jim Johnson each worked an inning behind Perez, with the latter collecting his third save for a 1-2-3 ninth.
