Padres beat Braves on Solarte's hit in 11th
Jun 12, 2015 - 2:32 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yangervis Solarte's two-run single in the 11th inning lifted the San Diego Padres to a 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday afternoon in the finale of a four-game series. The Padres earned a split of the series after tying the score with three runs in a wild eighth inning.
The game started 56 minutes late because of rain and the benches cleared not long after that when Braves starter Julio Teheran hit Matt Kemp in the top of the first inning.
Order was kept and no punches were thrown, though Kemp and home plate umpire Jordan Baker went down in a heap near the first base line after Kemp slipped.
Baker later ejected Padres manager Bud Black for arguing that a ball hit an Atlanta player as he left the batter's box, and it only got stranger after that.
"This (was) a pretty intense series," Black said. "The tension was a little high."
The Padres scored their three runs in the eighth inning on a passed ball, a bases-loaded walk and catcher's interference.
And Cory Spangenberg scored the go-ahead run on Solarte's hit in the 11th after reaching base with a bunt single that hopped over the head of pitcher Brandon Cunniff (2-2).
Dale Thayer (2-0) stranded runners at first and second base in the 10th inning to pick up the win and Craig Kimbrel threw a 1-2-3 11th for his 15th save.
The Padres went 4-3 on a seven-game road trip and the Braves finished 3-4 on their homestand.
Padres center fielder Wil Myers came off the disabled list after missing 28 games with left wrist tendinitis and went 0-for-5 with a walk and a run scored.
Teheran pitched into the eighth and was charged with four runs -- three earned -- despite giving up just four hits and striking out seven.
Padres starter Andrew Cashner gave up four runs, seven hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings.
The Padres scored a run off Teheran in the first inning but scuffled against him for most of the game. He allowed just two baserunners between the second and seventh innings and had faced the minimum over the past four when Alexi Amarista and pinch-hitter Solarte started San Diego's rally with back-to-back singles in the eighth.
Teheran was taken out after giving up a walk to Myers to load the bases and the Braves ended up using four relievers in the inning.
Amarista scored on a passed ball and Dana Eveland walked pinch-hitter Justin Upton to load the bases. Nick Masset struck out Kemp, but Luis Avilan walked Yonder Alonso to force home a run. David Aardsma also recorded a strikeout before the tying run scored when catcher Christian Bethancourt's glove made contact with Spangenberg's bat as he fouled off a pitch.
"If we go out there and we get 1-2-3 (eighth) and we hand the ball off to (Jason) Grilli and we don't blow up the bullpen, we get a chance to win the series and have a winning homestand. That didn't happen." Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
In the first, Teheran hit Kemp on the arm with a fastball that sailed high and inside. Kemp threw his bat to the ground and appeared to exchange words with Teheran as he walked to first base, causing both benches and bullpens to empty.
Baker was holding Kemp back when the outfielder slipped and Baker went down with him, giving the appearance that he had tackled the player.
Kemp stole second base and scored on Derek Norris' bloop single into right field to give San Diego a 1-0 lead.
The Braves tied the score on Freddie Freeman's double over the head of left fielder Will Venable in the bottom of the inning.
The score remained tied until Freeman homered just over the left-field wall leading off the sixth inning, his 11th of the season.
Atlanta tacked on two runs in the bottom of the seventh after Andrelton Simmons and Bethancourt hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Both moved up on Teheran's sacrifice bunt and Simmons scored on Jace Peterson's chopped infield single off home plate.
Black was ejected after the play, apparently for arguing that the ball struck Peterson while he left the batter's box and should be ruled foul.
Cameron Maybin hit a sac fly on Cashner's last pitch to make it 4-1.
