Braves try to lock down series with Padres

Jun 11, 2015 - 11:06 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cashner tries to bounce back from his worst showing of the season on Thursday when the San Diego Padres close out a four- game series with the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.

Cashner was awful on Saturday in Cincinnati, but escaped without getting a decision, despite giving up seven runs and eight hits with five walks in 5 2/3 innings.

The Padres, though, overcame that and scored six runs over the final three innings and managed a 9-7 win.

"This might be one of the best games I've been here for as a Padre," said Cashner, who is 2-8 on the year with a 4.05 ERA.

Atlanta will counter with righty Julio Teheran, who is 4-2 with a 4.87 ERA. Teheran did not get a decision on Saturday against Pittsburgh, as he allowed four runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings of a 5-4 win.

"I was trying to be aggressive and attack the zone," Teheran said. "That's something I figured out I had been doing in the past, and this year I wasn't doing."

Teheran is 1-2 in three starts versus the Padres with a 5.79 ERA.

Atlanta has won the last two in this series and on Wednesday Williams Perez tossed seven solid innings to lead the Braves to a 4-1 win.

Perez (2-0) scattered four hits and two walks in picking up career win No. 2 in his fifth career start. He was charged with one unearned run and watched his offense knocked around San Diego's pitching staff for 14 singles.

"It was a well played baseball game," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "(Perez) gave us a great opportunity to win the ball game and we converted."

Kelly Johnson went 3-for-4 and drove in a run in his first game in nearly a month, and Cameron Maybin added two hits and an RBI in the win, just the Braves' third in eight games.

Tyson Ross (3-6) allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings for San Diego, which has dropped three of four on the heels of a promising four-game winning streak.

Cory Spangenberg recorded two doubles for the only extra-base hits of the night and finished 3-for-4 with an RBI in defeat.

San Diego was 4-3 versus the Braves last season.
