D-backs, Twins get back to work at Target Field
Sep 23, 2014 - 2:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Rookie Andrew Chafin makes his third attempt at a first big-league victory on Tuesday night, when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit Target Field for game two of a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins.The Diamondbacks ended a pair of streaks with a win in Monday's opener, stopping a six-game overall skid and ending a 10-game drought in road games.
Arizona has won consecutive road games once since late June.
Mark Trumbo homered for the third time in two games and has driven in 15 runs over his last nine.
"You get some results it helps you be more confident and he's swinging the bat pretty dangerously right now," manager Kirk Gibson said.
Chafin has held opponents to a .171 batting average while allowing just six hits across two starts, but the Diamondbacks have scored just twice in his support.
He tossed six innings against San Francisco on Wednesday and was touched for two runs on three hits over six innings in a game Arizona lost, 4-2.
He pitched five scoreless innings in Cleveland on Aug. 13 and got a no- decision in Arizona's 1-0 victory.
The loss on Monday pushed the Twins to 90 defeats for the fourth straight year.
"It's been a terrible year," Minnesota's Ricky Nolasco said. "Just trying to finish healthy."
Twins starters have posted a 5.67 earned run average and allowed a .308 bating average in the last month.
Kyle Gibson gets the start after defeating Detroit, 8-4, on Wednesday with six innings of four-run ball. He's 3-3 since the start of August with a 6.22 ERA.
In four interleague starts, he's 0-4 with a 7.59 ERA.
Gibson has never faced the Diamondbacks.
On Monday, Trumbo's two-run homer highlighted a five-run Arizona fifth inning as the Diamondbacks defeated the Twins, 6-2.
Didi Gregorius had three doubles. A.J. Pollock also posted three hits and scored a run.
Josh Collmenter (11-8) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings to notch the win.
Nolasco (5-12) surrendered five runs on nine hits and a walk over 4 2/3 frames for the Twins.
Arizona swept the Twins the last time these teams met back in 2011.
