Jeter, Yankees pay a visit to Boston

Sep 26, 2014 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Jeter's final Yankee Stadium appearance was everything it was built up to be. Now the future Hall of Famer enters what will be his final series when the New York Yankees open a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Jeter gave the Bronx one more magical moment on Thursday, as his game- winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning carried the Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

After he was mobbed on the field by his teammates, Jeter's family, former teammates Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte, as well as his longtime manager Joe Torre, joined in for the postgame revelry on the field.

"It was above and beyond anything that I've ever dreamt of. This was a lot of fun," said Jeter, who finished with two hits and three RBI. "I think I've done a pretty good job of controlling my emotions throughout the course of my career. Today, I wasn't able to do it. It's been getting more and more difficult these last few weeks, but today I wasn't able to do it."

After the game, Jeter reflected on his career.

"Every single day I went out there and played as hard as I possibly could. I did it here in New York, which I think is much more difficult to do," he mused. "I'm happy for that."

Jeter also said that Thursday night would be his last at shortstop. However, he did say he would play in some capacity this weekend.

"Out of respect for the Red Sox, their fans and the rivalry, I'm going to DH," Jeter said.

"I don't know about (Friday). I'm not sure. I will play, but I hope that people can respect my decision on that. I've only played shortstop for my entire career, and the last time I want to play it is (Thursday)."

Getting the call for the Yankees in Friday's opener will be lefty Chris Capuano, who lost to Toronto his last time out. Capuano gave up four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings in that one and fell to 2-4 on the year to go along with a 4.67 ERA.

Capuano, of course, started the season with the Red Sox and is 0-2 in three starts against them with a 5.74 ERA.

Boston, meanwhile, will counter with righty Steven Wright, who will make a spot start for the Red Sox. Wright has made five relief appearances for the Red Sox this season and has pitched to a 3.38 ERA without recording a decision.

The Red Sox enter this final weekend having won three of four. They captured a series from the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, as Christian Vazquez smacked a two-run homer among his four hits, three RBI and two runs scored to power Boston to an 11-1 rout.

Rusney Castillo belted a three-run shot for his first career homer for Boston, which has won four of its last six games. Allen Webster (5-3) allowed a run on seven hits and a walk over seven innings to notch the win.

"A lot of very good at-bats, particularly at the bottom of the order," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

The Yankees are 10-6 versus the Red Sox this season.
