Twins beat White Sox, spoil Konerko's jersey retirement
May 24, 2015 - 12:08 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Trevor May threw a career-high seven innings to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.May (3-3) allowed all three White Sox runs on six hits but also struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Torii Hunter and Eduardo Nunez each homered for the Twins.
Prior to the game, Chicago retired Paul Konerko's No. 14. He spent 16 of his 18 major league seasons with the White Sox and was a member of their 2005 World Series winning team.
"When it comes to the fans and myself, we have a connection," said Konerko.
Konerko hit 439 home runs in his career, but the present White Sox could not muster that same power. Adam Eaton and Alexei Ramirez each had two of Chicago's seven hits.
Chris Sale (3-2) struck out 10, but he allowed four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and a walk in eight innings.
Sale cruised through the first inning before two mistakes cost him in the second. Hunter crushed a high fastball into the left-field seats to put the Twins up 1-0, and after Kurt Suzuki's deep drive was caught by Eaton, Nunez also hit a high fastball out to give Minnesota a two-run edge.
Adam LaRoche started the bottom of the second with a double off the wall in right-center that Aaron Hicks was unable to run down. LaRoche moved up a base on Conor Gillaspie's groundout and scored on Ramirez's single.
Minnesota extended its lead to 4-1 in the third. Danny Santana reached on an error to start the inning, and Brian Dozier's double put two in scoring position with no outs. The White Sox conceded a run on Shane Robinson's groundout, but the Twins added one more on a single by Trevor Plouffe.
"Runs in today's game are tough to come by," said Twins manager Paul Molitor. "Today, we followed up a couple home runs with a nice two-run inning."
Again, the White Sox had an answer. Eaton's one-out triple scored Carlos Sanchez, and Eaton went home on Melky Cabrera's groundout.
Both pitchers then settled in. Sale faced one batter over the minimum over the rest of his outing, and May only had to get out of one jam in the fifth.
With May out of the game in the eighth, Eaton greeted reliever Aaron Thompson with a drive to right-center field. Hicks ran the ball down in the gap and made a diving catch on the warning track to take away extra bases for Eaton.
In the ninth, Glen Perkins recorded his 16th save, but not before the potential winning run reached base. Ramirez singled and stole second base before J.B. Shuck walked, but Tyler Flowers struck out to end the game.
Game Notes
Chicago's Jose Abreu's 17-game hitting streak came to an end ... Sale has struck out 10-plus batters 20 times in his career and threw eight innings for his third straight start ... Minnesota has scored 14 runs -- 12 earned -- in three appearances against the lefty this season ... The rubber game on Sunday will feature Chicago's Jose Quintana against Minnesota's Kyle Gibson.
