Cumbie leads Avengers to Wild Card win over Blaze
Jul 3, 2007 - 5:48 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Avengers rode the arm of Sonny Cumbie to a 64-42 victory over the Utah Blaze in the wild card game of the Arena League playoffs on Monday.Cumbie completed 26-of-37 passes for 306 yards and seven touchdowns and Rob Turner caught eight passes for two scores. Turner was one of three Los Angeles receivers to haul in a pair of touchdowns.
Robert Quiroga and Josh Jeffries also hauled in a pair of scores for the Avengers, who will play No. 2 seed Chicago in the divisional round on Monday.
Cumbie outplayed Joe Germaine, who connected on 24-of-38 passes for 323 yards and five touchdowns, but also three picks. Tom Pace led the Blaze with 11 catches for 138 yards and three scores.
Cumbie and Germaine traded touchdown passes in the first period as the teams played to a 14-14 draw.
However, Germaine threw an interception on the first drive of the second quarter which led to a Cumbie touchdown strike. Aaron Boone fumbled, leading to another Cumbie score as the Avengers outscored the Blaze, 23-0, in the second.
