Wimprine, defense propels VooDoo in rout of SaberCats
Apr 6, 2008 - 4:31 AM NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Danny Wimprine threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the New Orleans VooDoo to a 72-43 victory over the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats on Saturday night.Wimprine finished 19-of-29 for 222 yards, and James Jordan scored three times for the VooDoo (5-1), who avenged their ArenaBowl XXI loss to San Jose last July.
A 49-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter by Calvin Spears put New Orleans ahead, 14-7.
After the SaberCats closed to within 21-17 in the second, Norman LeJeune ran back another interception 32 yards for a score. The VooDoo posted 33 unanswered points to take a commanding 55-17 lead after three quarters.
San Jose quarterback Mark Grieb was 38-of-55 for 330 yards and six touchdowns for the SaberCats (3-3). Jason Geathers hauled in 18 catches for 188 yards and two scores.
