Darvish has sprained elbow, may need surgery
Mar 7, 2015 - 6:44 PM Surprise, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, an injury that could require season-ending Tommy John surgery.Darvish underwent an MRI exam on Friday after pitching just one inning in his spring debut Thursday, exiting the contest with tightness in his right triceps. Texas' ace has discussed possible options for surgery with team orthopedist Dr. Keith Meister, but he will consult with other surgeons before making a final decision.
"I will be disappointed if I have to miss the season, but I want to look at all options, including getting a second opinion, before I make a final decision," Darvish said in a statement. "In the meantime, my heart is with my teammates, and our focus remains on accomplishing our goals for the season."
Darvish missed the final seven weeks last season due to mild inflammation in his right elbow.
The 28-year-old right-hander was 10-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 22 starts before the injury. He owns a career mark of 39-25 with a 3.27 ERA in 83 starts over three seasons with the Rangers.
