Lulay, Lions rout Eskimos 36-1

Aug 20, 2011 - 5:00 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Travis Lulay threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns to lead the British Columbia Lions to a 36-1 thrashing of the Edmonton Eskimos Friday night.

Arland Bruce caught nine passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns, Kierrie Johnson hauled in six balls for 84 yards and Akeem Foster grabbed three balls for 65 yards and one touchdown for the Lions (2-6).

"It felt good to get the win, that's the ultimate thing," Bruce said. "I just wanted to come to this team to help out and I'm slowly getting into the mix and we came out with the victory."

Jamal Robertson led the Lions with 62 yards rushing, while Paul McCallum converted on two field goal attempts.

The British Columbia defense feasted on a weak offensive line for Edmonton, racking up eight sacks.

Ricky Ray completed 11-of-19 passes for 81 yards but was picked three times and sacked four times, contributing to the poor Eskimos showing.

"It's disappointing, I just didn't play well, offensively we didn't play well," Ray said. "There are a lot of things that we're doing wrong out there and we've got to find a way to fix them."

Prechae Rodriguez led the Eskimo receivers with four catches for 67 yards and Daniel Porter rushed five times for 22 yards for Edmonton (5-3).

Midway through the first quarter, BC opened the floodgates with a 56-yard strike from Lulay to Foster to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.

The Lions expanded their lead later in the quarter when McCallum connected on a 25-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

With two minutes to go in the first half, McCallum knocked a 37-yard field goal attempt through the uprights. And in the waning moments of the half, Lulay connected with Bruce on a 17-yard touchdown strike to give the Lions a comfortable 20-1 halftime lead.

The Lions poured it on in the second half, as Lulay connected on a 10-yard touchdown throw to Bruce and found Geroy Simon for a 25-yard score to put the game away. Midway through the fourth, British Columbia added a safety for good measure to cap the scoring at 36-1.

Edmonton was unable to get any offense going, scoring only a single on a missed field goal in the second quarter.

Game Notes

The Eskimos have lost three games in a row and have relinquished first place in the West Division, falling 1/2 game behind Calgary...The teams have split their first two meeting of the season...Edmonton leads the all-time series 102-69-4.
