Toronto hangs on to down Eskimos

Oct 5, 2014 - 3:02 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly passed for a touchdown and ran in a two-point conversion with under a minute to play, but the Edmonton Eskimos' ensuing onside kick try failed and the team fell to the Toronto Argonauts, 33-32, Saturday at the Rogers Centre.

Swayze Waters connected on four second-half field goals and added a fourth- quarter single for Toronto (5-8). His 38-yard boot with 1:21 left to play proved to be the winning score for the Argos. He went 6-of-7 on his field goal tries in the game.

Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray completed 22-of-33 passing for 224 yards and two touchdowns with an interception in the team's win. Chad Owens, who missed significant time earlier this season due to injury, hauled in a team-best nine receptions for 106 yards and two first-half touchdowns.

Reilly connected on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Nate Coehoorn with 25 seconds remaining for Edmonton (9-5), and then he converted the two-point conversion to cut the Toronto lead to one. But the team's onside kick try was recovered by the Argonauts, who ran out the remaining few seconds to hold onto the win.

Reilly completed 24-of-32 passing for 272 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, and added 36 rushing yards with a score on the ground. Adarius Bowman, who entered the weekend as the CFL's leading receiver, caught six passes for 44 yards.

The scoring started when Ray hit Owens on a 28-yard pass completion early in the first quarter, and the two hooked up once again later in the period to push Toronto's lead to 14-0.

The Eskimos got on the board when Kendial Lawrence returned a kickoff over 100 yards for a major, cutting the score to 14-7 in favor of the Argonauts. Waters closed out the first-quarter scoring with a 45-yard field goal.

Waters started out the scoring in the second quarter by connecting on a 47- yard field goal try to push the Argos' lead to 20-7. But the momentum would shift for the rest of the half.

Reilly rolled out looking to pass later in the quarter, and decided to tuck the ball and run, taking it 23 yards to the end zone to cut Toronto's lead to 20-14 just over nine minutes into the second quarter. Robert Gill fumbled the ensuing kickoff for Toronto, which gave the ball back to Edmonton. Shortly after, Reilly found a wide open Lawrence for a 15-yard touchdown to give the Eskimos the 21-20 lead, which they took into the half.

Waters connected on a 13-yard field goal midway through the third, which proved to be the only score of the period. Toronto retook the lead on the kick, 23-21.

Two more Waters field goals at the start of the fourth increased the Argonauts lead to 29-21 before Hugh O`Neill booted through a 44-yard try for Edmonton, which sliced the Toronto lead to 29-24.

A single and another field goal by Waters pushed the Argonauts' lead to 33-24, which set up Reilly and the Eskimos for the touchdown not even a minute later, although the team's comeback attempt fell short.
