Bryant's 2 TD catches help Stampeders top Roughriders 40-20
Jul 25, 2010 - 5:04 AM CALGARY (CP) - Romby Bryant caught a pair of touchdown passes from Henry Burris as the Calgary Stampeders doubled the Saskatchewan Roughriders 40-20 in CFL action Saturday night.Burris also threw TD passes to P.K Sam and Nik Lewis, while Joffrey Reynolds added a rushing touchdown for the Stampeders (3-1), who took over sole possession of top spot in the CFL's West Division. Rob Maver added a field goal for the Stamps.
Wes Cates rushed for a touchdown for the Riders (3-1), while Weston Dressler caught a 26-yard pass in the end zone from quarterback Darian Durant. Luca Congi kicked a field goal and a single.
Each team conceded a safety during the contest as well.
The Stamps threatened to score on their first possession after Deon Murphy ran the opening kickoff 50 yards back to the Saskatchewan 52-yard line. Burris then drove the Stamps deeper into enemy territory before Saskatchewan cornerback Leron Mitchell recovered a Lewis fumble at the 22-yard line to end the threat.
On Calgary's next possession, Burris engineered a seven-play, 56-yard drive that culminated in an eight-yard touchdown catch by Sam, his first in a Calgary uniform since being acquired in an off-season trade with the Toronto Argonauts for Jeremaine Copeland.
The Riders tied the score in the second quarter after a 16-yard touchdown run by Cates to cap off a six-play, 76-yard drive.
The Stamps had a pair of opportunities to retake the lead before the end of the first half, but the Riders thwarted both drives as safety James Patrick picked off a pair of errant passes by Burris in the end zone.
The Riders didn't have much luck putting up points either as a 43-yard field goal attempt by Congi hit the right post and bounced back into the field of play.
The Stamps regained their lead early in the third quarter when Bryant sprinted behind the Saskatchewan secondary and caught a long bomb from Burris for a 67-yard TD.
Following a 17-yard field goal by Congi, Maver responded by booting one from 21 yards out at the other end to put the Stamps up 17-10.
After Calgary linebacker Juwan Simpson sacked Durant at the Saskatchewan 10-yard line, Congi conceded a safety in the end zone to put the Stamps up by nine points heading into the fourth quarter.
Bryant then caught a 10-yard TD pass from Burris to give the Stamps a commanding 26-10 lead. On the previous play, running back Jon Cornish broke off a 50-yard run to put the Stamps deep into Rider territory.
Keon Raymond then picked off an errant pass by Durant and the Stamps capitalized when Reynolds ran for a six-yard score three plays later.
Saskatchewan's rough night continued as Congi missed a 46-yard field goal and had to settle for a single.
Burris then marched the Stamps on a five-play, 71-yard drive and capped it off by tossing an eight-yard TD pass to Lewis.
After Calgary punter Burke Dales conceded a safety, the Riders rounded out the scoring when Durant tossed a 26-yard TD pass to Dressler.
Notes: Calgary has an all-time record of 112-86-9 against Saskatchewan including a 66-34-5 mark in Calgary. ... With five catches, Lewis now has 474 career receptions to move him past Travis Moore (470) into third spot on the Stamps all-time list. ... Calgary is now 9-2-1 following a loss with John Hufnagel serving as coach and general manager.
