Lions shut down Argos
Sep 10, 2011 - 11:47 PM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Travis Lulay completed 19 of his 29 passes for 263 yards, one touchdown and one interception and kicker Paul McCallum knocked through all four of his field goal attempts to lead the British Columbia Lions to a 28-6 win over the Toronto Argonauts.Geroy Simon hauled in six passes for 117 yards, one touchdown and a long reception of 33 yards. Shawn Gore caught three balls for 79 yards and a long of 51 yards, while Arland Bruce snagged five passes for 34 yards for the Lions (4-6), winners of three straight.
Andrew Harris led the Lions ground game with 56 yards on eight rushes, while Tim Brown rushed eight times for 18 yards and a score.
Kicker Noel Prefontaine accounted for Toronto's only points, kicking a pair of field goals in defeat.
Steven Jyles threw for 220 yards on 18-of-33 passing for Toronto (2-8) while Cory Boyd ran 14 times for 71 yards and Jeremaine Copeland pulled in five passes for 73 yards.
The Lions scored five points in the opening quarter thanks to a safety and a 39-yard field goal by McCallum to cap a five-play, 27-yard drive.
The Lions rolled from there.
Early in the second quarter, Brown bowled his way into the end zone from the Toronto one yard line, and before the end of the half, McCallum knocked his second field goal of the game through the uprights for a 15-0 halftime lead.
Prefontaine and McCallum each kicked a pair of field goals in the third quarter, leaving the Lions with a 21-6 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
In the final quarter, Lulay found Simon in the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown pass to account for the final margin.
Game Notes
With the loss, Toronto has dropped two straight and remains in last place in the East Division...Simon's touchdown was his 88th as a member of the B.C. Lions, a franchise record...Saturday's game marked the final football game at Empire Field. The field will still be in use, as the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer still call the building home.
