Joseph stars in sub role, Eskimos top Argonauts

Aug 28, 2012 - 4:23 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Kerry Joseph came off the bench for an injured Steven Jyles in the first half and led the Edmonton Eskimos to a 26-17 win over the Toronto Argonauts on Monday.

Jyles, who was traded to Edmonton from Toronto in a December deal that saw Ricky Ray go to the Argonauts, made his first appearance in Toronto since the swap.

Jyles, though, left the contest with less than a minute remaining in the opening quarter with a right leg injury.

Joseph came on and went 13-of-20 with 169 yards and two interceptions, but also carried the ball four times for 44 yards and a score for Edmonton (5-3), which has won four of its last six contests.

"It's always tough getting into a game with that situation," the 36-year-old Joseph said. "Just flow with the rhythm of the game and let my playmakers make plays."

Hugh Charles had 15 rushes for 67 yards and a major.

Ray completed 26-of-38 passes for 251 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Argonauts (4-4), who have dropped two of their last three.

Edmonton took advantage of a pair of Ray interceptions to take a 10-0 lead in the opening frame.

Grant Shaw nailed a 22-yard field goal before Joseph punched it in from a yard out on the final play of the first quarter.

Swayze Waters split the uprights from 17 yards out before Shaw knocked through field goals of 32 and 12 yards before the half as Edmonton entered the locker room with a 16-3 advantage.

"Just disappointing, we can't just play one half of a game," Toronto head coach Scott Milanovich said.

Toronto made a game of it in the third, though.

Ray capped off a three-play, 75-yard opening second half drive with a 15-yard major to Dontrelle Inman, which cut the deficit the 16-10.

Shaw booted through his fourth field goal of the contest, a 50-yarder, midway through the frame before Toronto countered later in the third when Chad Hackert pulled the Argos within 19-17 with a 25-yard TD scamper.

But Charles punched it in from 10 yards out on Edmonton's ensuing series to finish off a four-play, 67-yard march and make it 26-17, and Waters was unable to connect from 50 yards away on Toronto's next trek down the field.

Edmonton took the clock down to the 3:08 mark on their next possession to essentially put the game away, although Shaw missed a 46-yard field goal.

Game Notes

Edmonton won both games of the season series ... Shaw's missed field goal in the fourth ended a string of 11 consecutive makes ... Inman had eight receptions for 117 yards.
