DeAngelis kicks Riders past Bombers

Sep 9, 2012 - 9:04 PM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - It wasn't a blowout, but the Saskatchewan Roughriders once again handed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a disheartening defeat.

The Roughriders, who recorded a franchise-record shutout of the Blue Bombers a week ago, pulled off a 25-24 victory on Sunday when Sandro DeAngelis' 40-yard field goal split the uprights as time expired.

Drew Willy threw for 188 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the victory, while Kory Sheets caught five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score.

DeAngelis made 3-of-4 field goal attempts for the Roughriders (5-5), who downed Winnipeg 52-0 in their previous meeting.

Joey Elliott completed 19-of-33 passes for 241 yards in the setback.

Demond Washington had an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown and Justin Palardy made five field goals for the Blue Bombers (2-8).

Palardy's final field goal -- a 30-yarder -- came with less than three minutes remaining and gave Winnipeg a 23-22 lead.

The Blue Bombers tacked on a single and punted the ball back to the Roughriders with just 28 seconds remaining. Willy then completed a 10-yard pass to Sheets and a 20-yarder to Brooks Foster before scrambling for 13 yards and stopping the clock with four seconds left to set up the winning kick.

"In retrospect, I should've kicked a field goal," Winnipeg coach Tim Burke said of his decision to punt. "I played it too conservative."

Saskatchewan reeled off a 71-yard scoring drive early in the third quarter to take a 20-14 lead. A 28-yard pass from Willy to Weston Dressler highlighted the march and Sheets capped it with a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Roughriders tacked on a single, but the Blue Bombers chipped away at their deficit.

Palardy made a 19-yard field goal toward the end of the third quarter, then hit a 21-yarder early in the fourth to make it 21-20. Another Saskatchewan single made a two-point game with 7:21 to play.

Earlier, Odell Willis recovered a Terrence Edwards fumble at the Winnipeg 28- yard line on the second play from scrimmage and DeAngelis nailed a 34-yard field goal moments later for a 3-0 Saskatchewan lead.

The Blue Bombers bounced back on their next drive as a long completion from Elliott to Edwards highlighted a 60-yard march, which was capped by a 22- yard field goal from Palardy.

Late in the first quarter, Winnipeg struck again when Washington returned a punt 82 yards for a 10-3 lead.

The Roughriders responded at the start of the second quarter when Willy found Sheets for a 33-yard, game-tying touchdown.

After a Winnipeg punt, Willy moved Saskatchewan in range for DeAngelis' go- ahead, 23-yarder, but the signal caller was intercepted by on the Roughriders' next series.

Brandon Stewart made the pick at the Saskatchewan 25-yard line and Palardy nailed a 32-yard field goal shortly thereafter to make it 13-13.

The Blue Bombers added a single near the end of the half for a 14-13 advantage.

Game Notes

DeAngelis made all five of his field goal attempts in last Sunday's shutout ... The previous record for the largest shutout in team history was a 47-0 final against the very same club back in 1949 ... The Roughriders have won four straight matchups in the series, but the Blue Bombers hold a 113-87-3 all-time edge.
