Lulay powers Lions' win in Edmonton

Jul 14, 2013 - 4:30 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Travis Lulay finished with 158 passing yards and two touchdowns along with a career-high 82 rushing yards to push the British Columbia Lions to a 17-3 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos in a game at Commonwealth Stadium that was affected by a heavy rainfall.

Lulay completed 12 of his 18 passing attempts in the winning effort for the Lions (2-1). Emmanual Arceneaux made a pair of catches for 53 yards and a touchdown while Andrew Harris recorded a team-high four receptions for 30 yards and a major. Harris also tallied 70 rushing yards.

Cord Parks played a big part in the victory as he led the defense with six tackles and an interception.

Mike Reilly went 13-of-21 for 97 yards in the loss for Edmonton (1-2). He also gained a team-best 37 yards on the ground while Cary Koch pulled in a game- high five catches for 11 yards. Damaso Munoz led all players with 10 tackles.

The poor weather conditions played a big factor in the contest as both offenses struggled to get anything going. Grant Shaw scored the only points of the first quarter with just under four minutes showing on the clock as he connected on a 32-yard field goal attempt that gave Edmonton a 3-0 lead.

British Columbia was unable to get onto the scoreboard until the 40-second mark of the second frame when Hugh O'Neill's 28-yard punt was downed the end zone for a single.

The Lions got into a rhythm on the first drive after the break as Lulay began making an impact as duel threat out of the pocket. Lulay completed all four of his passes on the drive including a 12-yard toss for a major to Arceneaux that helped B.C. take an 8-3 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the third frame.

B.C. took advantage of two major penalties on its next offensive possession and rushed the ball down the field to set up a 16-yard touchdown pass from Lulay to Andrew Harris. O'Neill chipped in the extra point attempt to extend the Lions' lead to 15-3 with just under four minutes left in the third frame.

The Lions' defense added onto the run as Shaw conceded a safety in the end zone in the fourth quarter, giving the visitors a 17-3 edge.

The Eskimos were unable to put together a late rally of any sort as their offense failed the find the end zone before time expired.

Game Notes

The Lions have won three in a row and seven of their last nine games in Edmonton...The Eskimos averaged 24 points per game coming into the contest...Edmonton fell to 0-2 in games played at Commonwealth Stadium this season...The win was the second in a row for B.C., which defeated Toronto at home on July 4...Hugh Charles gained only 36 yards on 10 carries as the reigning CFL Offensive Player of the Week...These teams will meet again in seven days in B.C..
