Roughriders hold on against Edmonton

Oct 13, 2013 - 1:14 AM Regina, SK (SportsNetwork.com) - A late goal-line stand made all the difference as the Saskatchewan Roughriders held on to defeat the Edmonton Eskimos, 14-9, at Mosaic Stadium.

Darian Durant completed 16-of-24 pass attempts for 170 yards and a major, as well as a pair of interceptions, for the Roughriders (10-5) as they posted their second win after losing four in a row. Running back Kory Sheets picked up a game-high 106 yards on 24 rushing attempts and also scored for the hosts.

Edmonton (3-12), the only team in the West Division standings without a winning record on the campaign, was paced by Mike Reilly who converted 17- of-34 pass attempts for 244 yards and a pair of interceptions as the team bowed for the third time in as many outings.

With the defeat, Edmonton has officially been eliminated from the playoffs.

Edmonton scored the first and only points of the opening quarter when Grant Shaw knocked through a 47-yard field goal for the Eskimos.

Saskatchewan responded in the second frame when Durant hooked up with Weston Dressler on a 20-yard TD pass play, followed by a five-yard TD run by Sheets to make the score 14-3 at the break.

The Eskimos closed the gap in the third thanks to a single by Shaw, a 50-yard field goal by the kicker and a safety when Ricky Schmitt conceded in the end zone. Still, Edmonton trailed by five heading into the fourth period.

With 1:33 left in the third quarter the game came to a standstill when Almondo Sewell suffered a blow to the left side of his helmet and remained on the ground after play ended. The Edmonton defensive tackle was tended to on the field and eventually taken off on a stretcher after he was stabilized.

At the 1:26 mark of the fourth quarter and the ball on the one yard line, the Eskimos appeared to be on the verge of taking the lead, but Saskatchewan called a timeout prior to the snap on third down, nullifying what might have been a go-ahead touchdown.

Instead, Reilly ran a quarterback sneak but failed to break the plane of the goal line, turning the ball back over to the Riders with 1:18 to play. Saskatchewan subsequently ran out the clock for a third straight win in the series.
