Fontaine's big plays push Argonauts past Blue Bombers
Jan 9, 2008 - 6:04 PM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Defensive end Ray Fontaine blocked a punt and forced a fumble to set up both touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts downed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 16-8, on Saturday.Fontaine blocked Pat Fleming's punt late in the first half, recovered it and was tackled just short of the goal line. One play later, running back John Avery scored his only TD from a yard out to give the Argonauts an 8-4 advantage.
With eight minutes left to play, Fontaine forced the Blue Bombers' Keith Stokes to fumble on a punt return, which cornerback Leron Mitchell recovered at the Winnipeg 20-yard line. Two plays after the turnover, Michael Bishop completed a 17-yard TD pass to Arland Bruce III to stake Toronto to a 16-5 lead.
Bishop finished 10-of-29 passing for 145 yards with a touchdown and interception. Winnipeg quarterback Kevin Glenn completed 21-of-46 passes for 181 yards.
Toronto (10-7) won its sixth straight game and for the eighth time in nine tries to move atop the East Division standings, one point ahead of Winnipeg (9-7-1).
The Argonauts can clinch first place - and home field for the conference final - if they defeat the Saskatchewan Roughriders next Saturday.
