Injuries continue to hurt Sri Lanka

Mar 10, 2015 - 8:02 AM The exclusion of batsman Dinesh Chandimal is the latest in a string of World Cup injury woes for Sri Lanka in the lead up to their final pool match against Scotland in Hobart.

The tournament committee on Tuesday approved Kusal Perera to replace Chandimal for Wednesday's fixture, with the latter suffering a hamstring injury during Sunday's 64-run loss to Australia.

The team had been hoping for a quick recovery, but there are reports Chandimal may be out of action for weeks.

The latest squad shuffle is a clear frustration for coach Marvan Atapattu.

"It's a big blow to lose anybody from our original squad," he told reporters after training at Bellerive Oval.

"We said to the selectors to select the best 15 and we've come to the stage where, due to unavoidable circumstances, injuries, we have five replacements."

Paceman Dhammika Prasad, slow-bowling allrounder Jeevan Mendis and batsman Dimuth Karunaratne are already out of the tournament, while Rangana Herath continues to recover from a cut to his spinning finger.

Having already confirmed a quarter-final spot, with an opponent yet to be decided for the March 18 SCG hit-out, Sri Lanka has three wins from five matches in pool A.

Favourites to overcome the winless Scots, Atapattu said the team is not approaching Wednesday's match any differently.

"We like to take every game seriously," he said.

Meanwhile Scotland has taken a confidence boost from Bangladesh's unexpected 15-run victory over England on Monday which eliminated the European team from the tournament and confirmed the Tigers' a quarter-finals berth.

"We certainly do take heart from that performance by Bangladesh," captain Preston Mommsen said.

"We've not yet put in a full-package display and we know that if we do hit the straps 100 per cent that we are capable of turning over big teams."

Play is scheduled to start at 2.30pm (AEDT) on Wednesday at Bellerive Oval.
