Scotland needs tougher training: Mommsen

Mar 14, 2015 - 10:17 PM Scotland skipper Preston Mommsen has signalled the need to face more regular, tough competition as his team ended a winless World Cup campaign with a seven-wicket loss to Australia.

The visitors posed no challenge to the powerhouse Australians on Saturday at Hobart's Bellerive Oval where they were all out for 130 in the 26th over.

In reply, the Aussies took less than 16 overs to hunt down the target.

Mommsen said his squad heads home better for the tournament experience but struggles to know how they can get practice against the likes of fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

"How we get more experiences facing that sort of bowling and being put under that sort of pressure, I'm not sure," the captain said after the match.

"But certainly some sort of program needs to be in place that we are being exposed to that level of cricket or just below, so we are getting better."

Starc took 4-14 against Scotland on Saturday, with five of the team dismissed without score.

"We knew they would come hard with pace," Mommsen said.

"As hard as you prepare, it's a very difficult thing to prepare for if you've not really been through those experiences very often."

He sees the future of Scotland cricket as bright, and championed the quality of the squad who he said leave Australia as a mentally stronger group.

"We have to go back to associate cricket and look to dominate every game that we play and I think we have the capabilities to do that," Mommsen said.

"Whenever World Cup qualifying tournaments come around we have to go out there and make sure we finish at the top and we qualify for every tournament in the future."
