Giants go deep in win over Padres

Sep 13, 2011 - 5:28 AM San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Pablo Sandoval clubbed a three-run home run, one of three home runs San Francisco used to down San Diego, 8-3, in the opener of a three-game series at AT&T Park.

Carlos Beltran hit a two-run home run and Cody Ross also hit a home run for the Giants, who have won two in a row after a three-game skid. Eric Surkamp (2-0), making his third career start, gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with one walk over 5 2/3 frames.

Nick Hundley and Chris Denorfia each finished with three hits for the Padres, who have dropped four of five. Aaron Harang (13-6) dropped his second decision on the road this season, giving up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks over five frames.

The Giants jumped out to a quick lead in the home first as Ross walked and scored when Beltran drove a 1-1 pitch into McCovey Cove over the right-field brick wall.

In the third, Ross belted a solo shot to left, and with two men on and one out, Aubrey Huff pulled a tailing fastball into right for a run-scoring single and a four-run advantage.

The Padres got on the scoreboard thanks to three singles in the fourth. Jason Bartlett knocked a base hit to center, moved to third on Jesus Guzman's infield single and subsequent throwing error by Surkamp and scored on Denorfia's single to right.

San Diego continued to play small ball with success in the sixth, trimming its deficit to one. Hundley started the two-out rally with a single to left and Denorfia followed him with another base hit in that direction. Steve Edlefsen replaced Surkamp to similar results, as Kyle Blanks and Orlando Hudson both greeted him with run-scoring singles.

San Francisco blew the game open with a four-spot in the seventh. Andres Torres singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Ross' single to right. After a walk and a Beltran fly out, Sandoval waited on a first-pitch fastball and drove it the opposite way into the seats for a three-run shot and an 8-3 game.
