Lester, Red Sox dominate ChiSox

Jul 31, 2011 - 3:36 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jon Lester dominated through eight innings and was backed by a potent offense that piled up 15 hits to give Boston a 10-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the second tilt of a three-game series.

Lester (11-4) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while fanning eight, snapping Boston's brief, two-game losing streak.

Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Youkilis smacked home runs, and Marco Scutaro added three RBI as the Red Sox improved to 19-6 in the month of July.

Philip Humber (8-7) gave up four runs on six hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings for the loss.

Paul Konerko and Gordon Beckham both went deep for the White Sox, winners in five of their last six entering the contest.

After managing just one hit through the first four innings, the Red Sox jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a five-hit fifth inning in which they brought nine batters to the plate.

"There's not too many games where they're going to be held down," Lester said of Boston's offense. "It's fun to watch. We get kind of spoiled pitching behind these guys. They swung the bats great, played good defense it was a good game all around for us."

Carl Crawford led off the frame with a single, stole second and came home on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia double. Josh Reddick followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners, and Scutaro's sacrifice fly to right brought home Saltalamacchia. Reddick moved to third on Jacoby Ellsbury's base hit and came home on Dustin Pedroia's sacrifice fly.

Ellsbury swiped second during Pedroia's at-bat, resulting in Chicago intentionally walking Gonzalez. Youkilis then brought home Ellsbury with a soft liner to third that bounced out of the glove of Brent Morel.

Will Ohman replaced Humber on the mound and induced an inning-ending groundout to second by David Ortiz.

Boston added another run in the eighth off of Brian Bruney on an RBI single by Scutaro, but they put the game away with a five-run ninth against the right- hander.

After a leadoff single by Pedroia, Gonzalez launched a two-run homer to right and Youkilis followed with a home run of his own into the left-field bleachers. Crawford singled two batters later and rounded the bases on a double by Saltalamacchia. Scutaro then brought Saltalamacchia home with a base hit up the middle.

Chicago got on the board in the seventh on Konerko's solo home run over the left-center field wall, and Beckham added a solo shot in the eighth.

"(Lester) came out strong got a lot of strikes and got a lot of outs fast," Reddick said. "He kept us off the field which is what we need, we need to focus on our hitting right now."
