Halladay notches 10th win as Phils take series

Jun 26, 2011 - 11:45 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Roy Halladay can add another 10-win season to his already impressive resume.

Philadelphia's ace tossed his fifth complete game of the season on Sunday to help the Phillies beat the Oakland Athletics, 3-1, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Halladay (10-3) gave up one run on eight hits while recording his seventh consecutive 10-win season. The right-hander also struck out four and walked zero in his 63rd career complete game.

The Phillies usually come away victorious when Halladay takes the mound, and that has been the trend recently. Philly has won in each of Halladay's last eight starts, with the star pitcher going 5-0 during the stretch.

"Today, I thought he was in a real good position," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of Halladay. "We scratched out three runs and he did a tremendous job."

Jimmy Rollins went 4-for-4 with two runs scored for the Phillies, who have posted a National League-leading 18-6 record in day games this season. Shane Victorino and Ben Francisco had an RBI apiece for the victors.

Ryan Sweeney drove in the lone run for the A's, who went 2-4 on a six-game road trip.

Josh Outman (3-2), a former Phillies farmhand, gave up three runs on eight hits over six full frames to suffer the loss. He also struck out four and walked two.

"I thought we had our opportunities," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "We had our opportunities and we missed them today. I hope everybody in there realizes that everybody can be beat."

The Phillies gave their ace some support early on. Rollins singled and Placido Polanco doubled to start the first inning. Victorino followed with an RBI single to left. Ryan Howard plated another run when he grounded into a double play.

The A's put their first two men on base in the second. Conor Jackson led off with a bloop double down the right-field line and Sweeney followed with an infield single. With men on first and second, Scott Sizemore hit a grounder to third baseman Polanco, who stepped on third and threw to first for a double play. Landon Powell grounded out to keep it a 2-0 game.

Oakland was able to get on the board in the fourth. Coco Crisp reached base on a bunt single, moved to second on a groundout and crossed the plate on Sweeney's two-out bloop single to center.

The top of the order came through for Philadelphia again in the fifth. Rollins' infield single, Polanco's base hit to center and Howard's walk loaded the bases with two outs. Francisco then hit a dribbler down the third-base line that Outman fielded. Rollins raced home on the play and Francisco beat the throw at first. Crisp made a nice catch in right-center field on a ball hit by Carlos Ruiz to keep it a 3-1 game.

Halladay retired seven straight batters before Jackson led off the seventh with a single. Two batters later, Sizemore doubled down the right-field line to put men on second and third. Powell popped out to second and pinch-hitter David DeJesus went down looking to end the threat.

Halladay tossed a perfect eighth and got Sweeney to ground into a double play in the ninth to cap his complete-game performance.
