Upton powers Diamondbacks in rout of Reds

Apr 9, 2011 - 6:54 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Justin Upton went 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run, two RBI and three runs scored, as the Arizona Diamondbacks won their home opener in convincing fashion, 13-2, over the Cincinnati Reds.

Miguel Montero had three hits, two runs scored and one driven in, Kelly Johnson belted a three-run homer and Xavier Nady doubled in a pair for Arizona, which has won two in a row following three straight losses.

Ian Kennedy (1-0) was the beneficiary of the run support, but he didn't need much in tossing eight innings of one-run ball. The 26-year-old righty allowed six hits and a walk while fanning nine.

"I can't say thanks enough for all the offense," Kennedy said.

Travis Wood (1-1) was knocked around for six runs on seven hits in five-plus frames for the Reds, who have dropped consecutive games after starting the season 5-0.

Wood struggled from the get-go, as Willie Bloomquist led off the home first with a double and came around on Upton's base hit to right-center. Stephen Drew stepped to the plate with two outs and made it 2-0 with an opposite-field double.

Another leadoff double in the second led to a run for Arizona, as Montero hit a two-bagger and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Brandon Phillips' sacrifice fly in the third got the Reds on the board, but the Diamondbacks pushed across three in the sixth to extend the lead.

Wood put the first three hitters on -- Chris Young beat out an infield single between two walks -- then was pulled after Nady doubled past a diving Scott Rolen at third for a 5-1 game.

Logan Ondrusek entered and allowed another run on Melvin Mora's sac fly, and Matt Maloney served up Upton's solo blast off the left-field foul pole in the seventh.

Things got worse for Maloney in the eighth. Doubles from Nady and Montero started the inning, and Bloomquist preceded Johnson's three-run blast with an RBI single. Maloney was mercifully pulled after giving up a solo shot to Chris Young to cap the six-run inning.

Joey Votto hit a solo blast off Aaron Heilman in the ninth to account for the final margin.
