Angels edge White Sox for third straight win
May 12, 2013 - 5:10 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The LA Angels of Anaheim may finally be turning things around. They're still, however, way back in the standings.
Mike Trout smacked a two-run homer and Jerome Williams tossed 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball in the Halos' 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox in the middle test of a three-game set.
Williams (2-1) surrendered seven hits and a walk for the Angels, who tied a season high with their third straight win to improve to 14-22. It's their second such stretch of the campaign.
"You kind of know when you're on a roll," Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo said of the team's success. "It is a really good feeling. We just kind of want to stay on it."
Jose Quintana (2-1) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on five hits and a walk for Chicago, which has dropped five of its last seven tilts.
"He just kind of battled his way through it," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said of Quintana. "He did well enough to keep us in it and give us a chance."
The Angels plated two in the opening frame when Alberto Callaspo led off with a single and Trout launched his two-run shot into the seats in left center, but Chicago got both runs back in the second.
With the bases loaded and one away in the inning, Tyler Flowers' fly ball to right wasn't deep enough to score a run. But Tyler Greene beat out a squibber off his fists to short and cut the deficit in half. Alejandro De Aza then grounded a base hit through the hole on the right side to push across Dayan Viciedo, but the trailing runner Jeff Keppinger was thrown out on Josh Hamilton's one-hop throw to the plate.
The Halos went ahead after pushing across a run in the third.
Albert Pujols ripped a one-out single to left and Hamilton reached on a fielding error to put runners on the corners. A passed ball allowed Pujols to score and make it 3-2.
Garrett Richards tossed a 1-2-3 eighth and Ernesto Frieri worked around a one- out single in the ninth to notch his seventh save of the year.
Game Notes
The Angels were 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base ... Trout's homer was his sixth of the season ... Chicago was 3-for-5 with RISP.
