Braves beat Mets to complete Friday's suspended game
May 25, 2013 - 11:30 PM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Dan Uggla's base hit in the 10th inning sent home the go-ahead run, and the Atlanta Braves took a 7-5 decision over the New York Mets in the completion of Friday's rain suspended contest. The Mets scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at 5-5, but the contest was suspended following a 75-minute rain delay.
When play resumed on Saturday, New York's Bobby Parnell worked out of trouble in the ninth by inducing an inning ending double play, but Brandon Lyon (1-2) wasn't as fortunate in the following frame.
He walked Freddie Freeman to start the 10th and Brian McCann ripped a double down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Uggla then pushed the go-ahead run across with a single into left to make it 6-5.
The Braves tacked on an insurance run on B.J. Upton's sacrifice squeeze bunt. Jordan Schafer, pinch-running for McCann, hustled down the third base line and beat Lyon's flip to the plate for a two-run advantage.
Craig Kimbrel locked down his 15th save of the season to secure a seventh straight win for Atlanta. He allowed the first two runners to reach, but got Ruben Tejada to pop out on a bunt attempt.
Justin Turner then grounded into a game-ending double-play to ensure the Mets' fifth loss in six games.
Uggla stroked a solo homer earlier in the contest and Freeman gave Atlanta a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run homer. Freeman scored three times -- including the go-ahead run.
After Uggla's homer brought the Braves even in the seventh, Evan Gattis broke the 3-3 tie an inning later. Pinch-hitting, he stroked a two-run single with the bases loaded to give the Braves a brief advantage, but the Mets quickly countered.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Daniel Murphy laced his third hit of the game, a single into center to score John Buck.
Upton committed a fielding error on the play, which allowed Tejada to advance to third. The blunder proved costly, as the Mets brought the tying run home on a wild pitch from Anthony Varvaro (2-0). Tejada raced to the plate and just beat the throw to make it 5-5.
Varvaro started the ninth for the Braves a day later and set the Mets down in order to pick up the win.
Lucas Duda drove in the Mets' first run when his shallow fly ball dropped into left field for a base hit in the first inning. Buck drilled his 11th homer of the season to tie the score at 2-2 in the fourth.
Jeremy Hefner tossed six innings and retired 16 of the last 18 batters he faced. He left with the lead after Marlon Byrd provided an RBI single in the fifth, but reliever LaTroy Hawkins immediately gave up the advantage when Uggla homered to start the seventh.
Kris Medlen made the start for Atlanta and also went six innings. He struck out nine and surrendered three runs on seven hits.
Game Notes
The Mets have lost all nine games in which Hefner has started ... It was New York's first suspended game since an Aug. 6 contest against the Chicago Cubs in 1986. The Mets won 7-6 when play resumed the next day ... New York's Ike Davis struck out four times and finished 1-for-5 ... McCann had three hits for Atlanta, which went 2-for-8 with RISP.
