Mayberry's grand slam lifts Phils past Marlins in extras
Jun 5, 2013 - 6:06 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - John Mayberry tied the game with a solo shot in the 10th and then won it with a grand slam in the 11th, as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the Miami Marlins, 7-3, in the middle test of a three-game set Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. After the Marlins took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th, Mayberry led off the bottom half with a line-drive shot off Steve Cishek into the seats in left- center field.
Michael Stutes (1-0) then worked around a two-out single in the 11th before Domonic Brown reached first on Miami reliever Edgar Olmos' fielding error with one out in the home half.
Brown moved to second on pinch-hitter Kyle Kendrick's bunt before Olmos (0-1) intentionally walked Freddy Galvis and issued a four-pitch free pass to Erik Kratz to load the bases.
Facing a 1-1 count, Mayberry scorched a fastball into the first row in left field to send the Phillies to their third straight victory.
"It's definitely awesome. It's something that you dream of doing," Mayberry said of his late-game heroics. "One of those crazy games where you're the guy up to the plate in key situations and you're able to come through."
Kratz added a game-tying double in the seventh, while Delmon Young registered an RBI and a run scored in the victory.
Rob Brantly and Casey Kotchman each knocked in a run for the Marlins, who had won three straight before dropping the first two games of this set.
"That was a tough loss for us," Miami coach Mike Redmond admitted. "We had a couple of opportunities early in the game, we had runner there on third with one out, and we couldn't get those add-on runs."
Miami started Ricky Nolasco sliced through the Phillies' lineup in the early going, allowing just one hit through six frames before running into trouble in the seventh.
With the Phils down 2-0, Ryan Howard led off the frame with a double off the right-field wall before scoring two batters later on Young's two-bagger to center. After Galvis fanned, Kratz clubbed a pinch-hit double off the top of the wall in right to plate Young and knot the game at 2-2.
Miami jumped in front briefly in the 10th. Antonio Bastardo issued a leadoff walk to Juan Pierre, who moved second on a bunt and then stole third before racing home on Bastardo's wild pitch to give the Marlins a 3-2 edge.
Early on, Miami got to Philadelphia starter Jonathan Pettibone in the second, as Marcell Ozuna ripped a leadoff double and Derek Dietrich followed with a single before Ozuna scored on Kotchman's groundout to make it 1-0.
The Marlins added another run in the fifth. Adeiny Hechavarria smacked a leadoff single before reaching second when Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins was unable to handle a throw from catcher Humberto Quintero on Hechavarria's steal attempt.
The error proved costly, as Brantly followed with a single to left to plate Hechavarria for a 2-0 lead.
Game Notes
The last time the Phillies ended a game with a grand slam was Aug. 13, 1993 when Kim Batiste accomplished the feat against Anthony Young of the New York Mets in a 9-5 victory at Veterans Stadium ... Nolasco was charged for two runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 frames ... Pettibone allowed two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and two walks over six innings ... The Phillies have scored exactly seven runs in three straight games ... Ozuna has reached base safely in 20 straight games ... Mayberry's grand slam was Philadelphia's first of the season.
