Miley, D-backs blank Giants
Jul 13, 2014 - 2:55 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Wade Miley and two relievers combined to toss a four-hit shutout, as the Arizona Diamondbacks evened this three-game set with the San Francisco Giants with a 2-0 win on Saturday.Miley (5-6) yielded four hits with three walks over seven stellar frames to win his second straight start for the first time since opening the season with consecutive victories against the Giants and Rockies. The 27-year-old lefty has surrendered just three runs in 21 2/3 innings this month.
"I'm just trying to stick to the plan," Miley said. "Get the scouting reports, stick with it and just go after hitters."
Brad Ziegler pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Addison Reed needed just nine pitches to get through the ninth and nail down his 21st save.
Aaron Hill homered for Arizona, which improved to 5-7 against the Giants this season. Hill, David Peralta and Gerardo Parra all had two hits, with Hill scoring both D-backs runs.
Ryan Vogelsong (5-7) was charged with both runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings of work. Brandon Belt singled and walked twice.
"It's kind of crazy that this keeps happening to me, but it's stuff that you go through during the season," said Vogelsong, alluding to the lack of run support. "It's like anything else, like an injury or not playing good. You keep fighting and come out the other side."
Hill's fourth-inning homer broke a 0-0 tie. It was the first long ball that Vogelsong has allowed at home this season.
Arizona padded its cushion in the top of the seventh, when Parra knocked in Hill with a single to right after he reached on a ground-rule double to start the frame. Jeremy Affeldt replaced Vogelsong and retired the side.
The Giants threatened in the home seventh, putting two runners in scoring position but ultimately coming up empty. Belt walked with one out and Joaquin Arias singled to left. Gregor Blanco advanced the runners with a groundout, bringing up the pitcher's spot.
Hector Sanchez pinch-hit for Affeldt and put a drive into a 1-2 Miley offering, lining it down the first base line, but 2013 Gold Glove winner Paul Goldschmidt came up with a diving stab to end the inning.
Game Notes
Arizona Martin Prado's season-high 10-game hit streak came to an end ... The D-backs went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, stranding eight ... Hill's HR was his seventh of the season.
