Giants hope to give Vogelsong run support vs. Diamondbacks
Jul 12, 2014 - 1:55 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Arizona starter Wade Miley halted a lengthy winless skid last weekend.San Francisco's Ryan Vogelsong would love to halt his own personal drought on Saturday afternoon when the Giants and Diamondbacks continue their three-game series.
Vogelsong has seen the Giants score just one run in total over the past three games he has started. Not surprisingly, Vogelsong has lost all three of those outings despite giving up only six runs in 18 1/3 innings.
It was much of the same for the righty on Monday as he was on the losing end of a 5-0 setback to the Oakland Athletics. Vogelsong gave up three runs on five hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings, falling to 5-6 on the year with a 3.92 earned run average.
"He was throwing the ball well. We just couldn't get some runs there for him," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of his 36-year-old hurler.
Vogelsong is 3-4 with a 4.82 ERA in his career versus the Diamondbacks, who he has made two starts against this season. He is 1-0 while giving up eight runs over 10 innings.
As tough as Vogelsong's drought has been, it yet compares to a nine-start winless stretch recently endured by Miley, who picked up his first win since May 10 this past Sunday versus Atlanta.
The left-handed Miley avoided a fourth straight losing decision, giving up a run on five hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts. He was coming off five straight no-decisions and improved to 4-6 with a 4.43 ERA.
Miley, 27, hasn't won back-to-back starts since April 1 and 6, the initial victory of that stretch coming against the Giants, though he did give up four runs over seven innings. He is 2-3 lifetime versus San Francisco with a 3.63 ERA.
The Giants grabbed last night's opener 5-0 behind the continued resurgence of Tim Lincecum, who logged seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball to win his fourth straight start. He walked two and struck out six to continue his successful stretch that began with a no-hitter on June 25 versus San Diego.
The two-time Cy Young award winner has surrendered just one run on 10 hits over his last four outings spanning 30 1/3 innings.
"I just know how hard it is to get to that point and you never take it for granted when you're in it. You try to ride it as long as you can," Lincecum said. "I'm going to ride this wave as long as it goes."
Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-4 with a homer and three runs batted in for the Giants, who had dropped three of four to Oakland prior to this series.
Arizona starter Mike Bolsinger was roughed up for all five runs on eight hits over five innings of work. Martin Prado extended his season-high hit streak to 10 games with a second-inning double.
"When you're in the middle of the plate, they're going to make you pay for it, which they did tonight," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson, whose club had won three of four coming in.
The Diamondbacks are 4-7 against the Giants this season.
