Posey, Bumgarner make history as Giants down D-backs
Jul 14, 2014 - 1:58 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner both hit grand slams to lead the San Francisco Giants to an 8-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the rubber match of a three-game set.It is the first time in MLB history that a team's starting catcher and pitcher each hit a grand slam in the same game
"It's almost like running an American League lineup out there," Posey said after the game.
Bumgarner (10-7) was also solid on the mound, earning the win after giving up four runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
Pablo Sandoval finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and Bumgarner also doubled for the Giants, who won three of their last five games before the All-Star break.
Cody Ross supplied a two-run homer and Martin Prado had three hits and an RBI for Arizona, which dropped two of its last three.
"Made a lot of mistakes ... we weren't able to overcome that," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said.
Diamondbacks starter Vidal Nuno (0-1) was tagged for four runs on six hits with a walk in five innings.
Arizona opened the scoring in the third. Nick Ahmed singled to right, moved to second on Nuno's sacrifice bunt and scored on Prado's base hit to left.
The Giants took a commanding lead after hitting grand slams in both the fifth and sixth innings. Bumgarner doubled with one out to left, Hunter Pence was hit by a pitch and Sandoval singled to load the bases. Posey crushed a 1-0 fastball into the left-field seats.
Matt Stites took the mound for Arizona in the sixth and did not fare any better. Joaquin Arias singled and advanced to second on center fielder Ender Inciarte's error. Ehire Adrianza reached on Ahmed's fielding error and Brandon Crawford walked to load the bases. Bumgarner put the game out of reach after stroking the first pitch he saw just over the wall in left for a 8-1 lead.
Aaron Hill led off the seventh with a single and Ross brought him home with a shot to left. Two batters later, Ahmed singled and came home on Nick Evans' double into the left-field corner.
Sergio Romo needed just eight pitches to set down the D-backs in the eighth and Santiago Casilla recorded a 1-2-3 ninth in the win.
