Bumgarner seeks to find win column as Giants wrap set with D-backs
Jul 13, 2014 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - San Francisco Giants hurler Madison Bumgarner will try to avoid going into the All-Star break with four straight losing starts as he takes the mound for Sunday's rubber match of a three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The left-handed Bumgarner has pitched to a 7.50 earned run average over his personal skid, falling to 9-7 with a 3.36 ERA on the year. He is just 3-5 with a 5.16 ERA in nine starts at home.
Bumgarner did manage to last seven innings on Tuesday versus Oakland, but lost a 6-1 decision. Four of the six runs he allowed came in the third frame and he yielded 10 hits and three walks in all.
"Overall I thought he threw well. Just the one inning got him. They got some key hits and we couldn't," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
The 24-year-old Bumgarner is 5-4 in his career versus Arizona with a 2.48 ERA. That includes a recent road win on June 22 as he held the Diamondbacks to only one unearned run and fanned seven over eight innings.
Vidal Nuno makes his second start for Arizona since being acquired from the New York Yankees on July 6. He gets the call today in place of Chase Anderson, who is being skipped to limit his innings.
Nuno made his D-backs debut on Tuesday and logged a gem, scattering three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. The 26-year-old southpaw also struck out seven in the no-decision.
"He moved the ball around, had great command and knew how to use his pitches," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said of Nuno. "He did a hell of a job for us."
Arizona evened this series on Saturday with a 2-0 shutout. Wade Miley threw the first seven innings of the blanking, Brad Ziegler pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Addison Reed needed just nine pitches to get through the ninth and nail down his 21st save.
Miley yielded four hits and three walks to win his second straight start. He has allowed just three runs in 21 2/3 innings this month.
"I'm just trying to stick to the plan," Miley said. "Get the scouting reports, stick with it and just go after hitters."
Aaron Hill homered for Arizona, which has won four of its last six.
Ryan Vogelsong (5-7) was charged with both runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings of work.
"It's kind of crazy that this keeps happening to me, but it's stuff that you go through during the season," said Vogelsong, alluding to the lack of run support. "It's like anything else, like an injury or not playing good. You keep fighting and come out the other side."
San Francisco has lost four of six and is a game back of Los Angeles for first place in the NL West.
The Diamondbacks are 5-7 against the Giants this season.
