Workman razor-sharp as Red Sox edge Orioles
Jun 11, 2014 - 5:42 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Workman took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in an impressive performance that carried the Boston Red Sox to a 1-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.Workman (1-0) had allowed only a walk to Nelson Cruz before Ryan Flaherty laced a clean single with two out in the bottom of the sixth. It was one of only two hits by Baltimore on the night, with Andrew Miller, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara finishing off the shutout after Workman stymied the Orioles through 6 2/3 innings.
"He was outstanding, especially in light of the two different rain delays," Boston manager John Farrell said of Workman.
Boston's pitchers made Mike Napoli's third-inning RBI single hold up to give the Red Sox just their second victory on a nine-game road trip that concludes Wednesday.
Chris Tillman (5-3) was saddled with the hard-luck loss after permitting the lone run in six innings of work.
"I was really pleased with Chris," O's manager Buck Showalter said. "Unfortunately they just pitched a little better than we did."
Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, suspended five games pending an appeal earlier in the day for throwing his bat onto the field Sunday against Oakland, was in the lineup and went 0-for-4.
A pair of rain delays in the second inning that totaled an hour and 33 minutes had no effect on Workman, who's still awaiting a hearing of his own for a six- game suspension he received for throwing a pitch behind Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria on May 30.
The young right-hander set down 13 consecutive Orioles before Cruz worked a walk in the fifth, and still had the no-hit bid intact until Flaherty drove a first-pitch curveball up the middle an inning later.
Despite having thrown a mere 67 pitches, Workman had his fourth start of the season end when Boston manager John Farrell removed him with two out and none on in the seventh.
Miller quickly finished out the inning, however, and Tazawa fanned two in a perfect eighth to protect the one-run edge before Uehara worked around a leadoff single to Steve Pearce to nail down his 13th save of the season.
While the Orioles generated few offensive chances, Boston had its share early on against Tillman, who got out of a pair of bases-loaded jams to keep the contest close.
The first came after the game's initial stoppage, a 15-minute pause, with Tillman striking out Jonathan Herrera to end the top of the second and have a pair of walks he issued come to no harm.
Boston loaded the sacks with none out in the fourth on singles by A.J. Pierzynski, Grady Sizemore and Herrera, but Tillman got a huge strikeout of Brock Holt and a double-play grounder off the bat of Xander Bogaerts.
The Red Sox did deliver a run in between, as Holt singled and moved to second on a walk to David Ortiz in front of Napoli's two-out hit to short right field in the third.
Game Notes
The Red Sox won for the first time in 19 games this season when scoring three or less runs ... Holt finished 2-for-5 and is batting .413 (19-for-46) during a 10-game hitting streak ... Baltimore's Nick Markakis had a 14-game hit streak halted after going 0-for-4 ... Boston shortstop Stephen Drew sat out a second straight game due to tightness in his right oblique ... Machado is now hitless in his last 15 at-bats.
