Davis, Orioles get past Jays
Jun 15, 2014 - 3:51 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Davis hit the go-ahead two-run homer and Bud Norris pitched into the seventh, as Baltimore edged Toronto, 3-2, in Saturday's third test of a four-game series.Nick Hundley knocked in the other run and Manny Machado added two hits for the Orioles, who have won three of four overall.
"(Davis) wants to be a contributor," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "It's frustrating to him sometimes the way he played last year. It bothers him that he can't contribute the ways he needs."
Norris (6-5) lasted 6 2/3 innings, during which he scattered seven hits and one run, walking one and fanning five. Zach Britton tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his seventh save.
Brett Lawrie and Josh Thole drove in a run each for the Blue Jays, losers in four of their last five. R.A. Dickey (6-5) allowed six hits and three runs -- two earned -- over 6 2/3 frames in defeat.
Norris left in the seventh up 3-1, after allowing consecutive two-out hits to Anthony Gose and Jose Reyes, then Darren O'Day retired Melky Cabrera on a sharp grounder to short where J.J. Hardy's throw to first barely beat the sliding batter.
Jose Bautista was plunked to start the eighth, then Edwin Encarnacion stroked a line-drive double to the wall in left. A relay throw home appeared to be late, but Bautista was called out. Replay upheld the call, instead determining that O's catcher Hundley did not obstruct Bautista's lane to the plate.
Brian Matusz walked pinch-hitter Steve Tolleson, then Ryan Webb allowed an RBI single from Lawrie which pulled the Jays within a run, but Nelson Cruz slid to snare Thole's liner to left which ended the frame.
Britton walked Reyes with one down in the ninth, but erased him on a game- concluding double-play grounder by Cabrera.
"We had a lot of opportunities today, we just couldn't cash them in and we got burned by the home run ball," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "They've got a good team over there. We let Norris off the hook early. I thought he was really, really good."
Toronto loaded the bases in the first on two singles and a hit-by-pitch, then Thole worked a walk which forced in a run.
Baltimore countered in the fourth, thanks to back-to-back singles by Delmon Young and Ryan Flaherty followed by a sacrifice fly from Hundley. It was a 3-1 game in the home fifth, as Adam Jones reached second on a single and error, then Davis launched a Dickey offering into the bullpen in left center.
