McCann homers twice, Yankees power past Red Sox
Apr 12, 2014 - 10:42 PM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brian McCann hit his first two homers in a Yankees uniform Saturday, helping New York beat the Boston Red Sox by a 7-4 margin in the third game of a four-game series.Kelly Johnson, Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Beltran also homered for the Yankees, who bounced back from Friday's 4-2 loss.
Japanese right-hander Hiroki Kuroda (2-1) gave up four runs on six hits while striking out five over 6 1/3 innings.
A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven. Mike Carp had two RBI.
John Lackey (2-1) got the start for Boston and allowed six runs on 10 hits -- including four homers -- while striking out six over 5 2/3 innings.
"The mistakes he made were up and unfortunately in this park, you pay for those mistakes, especially to right field," Pierzynski said of Lackey being done in by the long ball. "Other than his mistakes he threw the ball fine, it was just those mistakes were magnified because they were homers."
Both the Red Sox and Yankees entered Saturday's game with a 5-6 record, marking the first time both clubs have entered their 12th game of a season with a losing record since 1997, when both teams also started 5-6.
Beltran's homer in the first made it a 2-0 game. Jacoby Ellsbury reached base on a bunt single and scored on Beltran's two-out blast to right.
Pierzynski quickly tied things up in the second. Xander Bogaerts singled and crossed the plate on Pierzynski's homer to right.
McCann and Soriano hit back-to-back homers to start the fourth, making it 4-2 New York.
The Yankees extended their lead on McCann's second homer of the day in the sixth. Beltran led off with a double and scored when McCann cleared the wall in right-center field.
"He's hit the ball better than his numbers have indicated," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of McCann. "We feel that this park is really conducive to him and it showed up today."
Boston got two runs back in the seventh. Jackie Bradley Jr. and Daniel Nava walked around an out, chasing Kuroda from the game. Matt Thornton got David Ortiz to go down looking before hitting Mike Napoli. Carp followed with a two-run single to left-center field. Carp was caught stealing second to keep it a 6-4 contest.
Johnson's solo homer off Burke Badenhop in the eighth made it a three-run game.
Shawn Kelley tossed a perfect ninth for his second save of the season.
