Pujols' homer lifts Angels past Red Sox in 19
Aug 10, 2014 - 8:20 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Albert Pujols' homer in the bottom of the 19th inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.Pujols worked the count full against Brandon Workman (1-6), then deposited his 22nd homer of the year -- including the 11th walkoff shot of his career -- just over the wall in right.
The play was reviewed because the ball bounced back onto the field of play, but replay showed the ball just clearing the yellow line at the top of the wall for a home run.
"I was just looking for a pitch to hit," said Pujols. "I was trying to get a base hit to start something. I got a pitch to hit and I put my best swing on it."
Matt Shoemaker (10-4) retired all nine batters he faced in extra innings to record the win.
Each team plated a run in the 14th inning to keep the game deadlocked.
Dustin Pedroia singled off of Cory Rasmus with one out in the frame, then pure hustle took over. The Boston second baseman stole second and realized no one was covering third on the play. Pedroia alertly raced over to third to complete two steals in the sequence and David Ortiz followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to left that gave Boston a 4-3 lead.
Chris Iannetta doubled to lead off the home half of the 14th, Efren Navarro followed with a walk and Kole Calhoun singled to left to load the bases.
Mike Trout, who homered to tie the game in the eighth, grounded into what could have been a 6-4-3 double play, but Pedroia tagged second and decided to attempt a play at home to nab Iannetta which proved unsuccessful. Pujols proceeded to ground out sharply to third and Josh Hamilton struck out to end the threat.
Earlier, Calhoun doubled to begin the game before Trout reached on an infield single. The two moved up a base on a wild pitch by Boston starter Clay Buchholz, then Pujols sent a two-run double into right.
"I thought it was Clay's best outing of the year," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "Sometimes when you play a game as long as this and you lose, you feel like you lost two."
Angels starter Garrett Richards held the Red Sox hitless through six innings before Pedroia led off the seventh with a single to center. Ortiz followed with a double that plated Pedroia, then Yoenis Cespedes singled to put runners at the corners. Ortiz scored when shortstop Erick Aybar made an error on Mike Napoli's grounder and Xander Bogaerts sent a sacrifice fly to center that gave the visitors a 3-2 edge.
Trout came up with one out in the eighth and drilled his 26th homer of the season to tie the game at 3-3.
Collin Cowgill singled to begin the 10th inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Calhoun. Following an intentional walk to Trout, Pujols pushed Cowgill and Trout up a base with a groundout to second. Hamilton proceeded to pop out in foul territory to end the inning.
Game Notes
Richards allowed three runs -- one earned -- on three hits with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings ... Buchholz was charged with three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts over eight innings of work ... Reliever Heath Hembree made his Red Sox debut in the 15th inning ... Each team used nine pitchers in the game ... LA broke a season high-tying four-game losing streak ... Trout entered the game in an 0-for-12 slump.
