Wood's bat helps Cubs outlast Marlins
Jun 17, 2014 - 5:08 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis Wood hit the go-ahead, pinch-hit, RBI double in the 13th inning which sent Chicago past Miami, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game series.Jacob Turner (2-5) set down the first two batters he faced, but Junior Lake singled and Wood -- batting for reliever Carlos Villanueva -- smacked a double to center which allowed Lake to score. Villanueva (3-5) walked two but turned in two scoreless frames to snag the win.
"Whenever he holds a bat, he gives us a chance to win," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said of his pitcher and game-winning batsman.
James Russell earned his first save of the season by retiring the side in order in the home half.
"Usually in games like that whoever gets the big two-out knock wins," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
Starlin Castro hit a three-run homer in a four-run sixth inning for the Cubs, who have won three of their last four thanks to overcoming an early 3-0 deficit.
Giancarlo Stanton launched a two-run blast and scored twice for the Marlins, who have dropped four of their last five.
The Marlins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jake Marisnick singled, stole second and scored on Stanton's blast to right two batters later.
Miami tacked on another run in the third. Stanton hit a two-out single, stole second and raced home on Casey McGehee's single to left.
Fish starter Tom Koehler, meanwhile, was cruising until giving up four runs in the sixth. Counterpart Jason Hammel reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt, then Luis Valbuena and Justin Ruggiano singled to load the bases. Hammel crossed the plate when Anthony Rizzo grounded out and Castro followed with a three-run homer to left, making it 4-3 for Chicago.
But the Marlins quickly tied things up in the bottom half. Marcell Ozuna tripled to right-center field and scored on Adeiny Hechavarria's sacrifice fly.
Miami left the bases loaded in the seventh. Justin Grimm filled the bags with one out before handing the ball over to Wesley Wright. Garrett Jones grounded into a fielder's choice prior to Brian Schlitter getting Ozuna looking at strike three.
Jones just missed a game-winning homer in the 10th. After McGehee led off with a walk, Jones smacked Hector Rondon's 0-2 offering just wide of the foul pole in right. Jones then struck out swinging. Ozuna singled to put men on first and second, but Hechavarria and Jeff Mathis went down swinging to keep it a 4-4 game.
Both teams stranded a runner on second in the 11th, and Rizzo flied out to left with two on in the Cubs' 12th.
