Jones' HR lifts Marlins over Cubs

Jun 18, 2014 - 5:40 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the Miami Marlins over the Chicago Cubs, 6-5, in the middle installment of a three-game series.

Rafael Furcal went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored for the Marlins, who bounced back from Monday's 5-4, 13-inning loss. Adeiny Hechavarria went 4- for-5 with a run scored.

Miami starter Anthony DeSclafani allowed four runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. Sam Dyson (1-0) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up his first win in the majors.

"I definitely wanted to give the bullpen a rest," DeSclafani said. "I always want to go out there and give the team a chance to win and throw up zeros. There is a little extra pressure. I was glad I was able to do that, get outs and get into the seventh inning."

Junior Lake hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, who fell to 4-5 on their current 10-game road trip. Justin Ruggiano, Jeff Samardzija and Luis Valbuena each knocked in a run.

Samardzija gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits while striking out eight and walking three over six innings. Brian Schlitter (2-2) took the loss after giving up Jones' homer in the seventh.

"He had to work hard the whole ballgame," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said of Samardzija.

The Cubs broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh. Ex-Marlin Chris Coghlan hit a one- out single before Dyson took over for DeSclafani. Valbuena greeted Dyson with an RBI double to right.

The Marlins responded in the bottom half with Jones' three-run homer. Schlitter gave up a bunt single to Hechavarria before walking Casey McGehee. With one out, Jones smacked Schlitter's offering over the wall in right.

Chicago got one run back in the ninth. Steve Cishek gave up a leadoff double to Ryan Sweeney, who moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Ruggiano's sacrifice fly. Cishek fanned Anthony Rizzo to record his 16th save of the season.

The Marlins took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Furcal and Hechavarria hit back-to-back singles before Giancarlo Stanton struck out swinging. McGehee followed with a sharp grounder to Rizzo, who went to second with the throw in hopes of starting a double play. But Starlin Castro's wild throw to first allowed Furcal to score.

The Cubs responded with three runs in the second. Nate Schierholtz was hit by a pitch and Lake followed with a homer to left. Darwin Barney and Eli Whiteside hit consecutive singles before pulling off a double steal. Samardzija then helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to center.

Miami tied things up in the fourth. Marcell Ozuna walked, Jake Marisnick singled and J.T. Realmuto reached on Samardzija's fielding error to load the bases with no outs. DeSclafani then hit a dribbler in front of home plate that Whiteside turned into a 2-3 double play. Furcal followed with a two-run single up the middle to make it 3-3.
