Marlins resume set vs. Cubs with new look to rotation
Jun 17, 2014 - 2:54 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Rookie Anthony DeSclafani takes the mound opposite veteran Jeff Samardzija on Tuesday night when the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins continue their three-game set at Marlins Park.Samardzija was tagged for a season-high nine hits against Pittsburgh on Thursday, as he yielded four earned runs over six innings to go along with seven strikeouts and two walks.
The right-hander ranks among the National League leaders with a 2.77 ERA on the season but with only a 2-6 record to show for it. In his last outing, the offense was shut out for the fifth time among Samardzija's 14 starts. The Cubs were hitless in eight at-bats with runners in scoring position in that 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh.
"That's obviously not what you want to happen," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said of the run production. "It's kind of a coincidence when Jeff's throwing."
Meanwhile, Miami made a couple of moves to shake up its pitching rotation with the team just a game off the pace in the wide-open NL East. DeSclafani was called up from Triple-A New Orleans to replace Jacob Turner, who was sent to the bullpen. It is the second big league stint for DeSclafani, who was promoted from Double-A Jacksonville back in May and made two starts in place of injured 2013 NL Rookie of the Year Jose Fernandez before getting sent back down.
With Miami's rotation sporting a 6.55 ERA since June 5, the organization decided it was time to bring DeSclafani back up to the big team. The Marlins also called up top prospect Andrew Heaney to take the rotation spot of Randy Wolf, who was designated for assignment on Monday.
"We're trying to win," president of baseball operations Michael Hill said. "(DeSclafani and Heaney) are a part of what we're trying to do here. We felt like bringing the young pitchers in ... this was the time. Hopefully, they will help us win games."
Chicago claimed a 5-4 extra-innings victory in Monday's series opener. Playing the unlikely role of hero with a two-out RBI single in the 13th was Travis Wood, who threw eight shutout innings the previous day.
"Any time you're grinding it out and everybody's running out of pitchers and everybody is running out of players, to pull it out is outstanding," Wood said.
Starlin Castro notched his 10th homer of the season for Chicago. Castro boasts a 1.192 OPS over his last 10 games.
For Miami, Giancarlo Stanton hit home run No. 19 and Casey McGehee continued his hot streak with two singles and three walks. McGehee is batting .452 in his last 10 games and has hit safely in 11 straight.
Chicago won two of three against the Marlins at Wrigley Field earlier this month. Samardzija earned one of those victories on June 7, when he allowed two runs over seven innings.
