Lyles pitches, hits Rockies over White Sox
Apr 8, 2014 - 6:20 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Lyles spun 6 2/3 strong innings and also went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI to lead the Colorado Rockies to an 8-1 win over the Chicago White Sox in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Coors Field.Lyles (2-0) allowed just one run on five hits while striking out four to pick up the win.
Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored and Carlos Gonzalez added two hits and a homer for the Rockies, who took two of three from the Diamondbacks over the weekend.
Alexei Ramirez drove in the lone run for the White Sox, who have dropped four of their last five games.
Felipe Paulino (0-1) allowed six runs on nine hits and four walks in just 4 1/3 innings to saddle the loss.
The Rockies pushed a run across in each of the first three innings.
Gonzalez fell behind 1-2 in the first inning, but crushed a hanging slider to right field for a 1-0 lead.
"I've been on deck for a lot of his home runs, obviously, and that one got out quicker than any one that I've ever seen," Tulowitzki said of Gonzalez's homer.
Lyles helped his cause in the second after stroking a double to left-center field. D.J. LeMahieu worked a two-out walk before Lyle laced a double into the gap to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
With the bases loaded and one out in the third, Wilin Rosario ripped one up the middle that was deflected by Paulino and beat Marcus Semien's throw to first to score Michael Cuddyer.
The Rockies broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, LeMahieu smoked a base hit to right to score Tulowitzki.
Daniel Webb replaced Paulino on the mound and immediately surrendered an RBI single to Lyles. Charlie Blackmon followed with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Nolan Arenado.
Tulowitzki led off the sixth with a homer for a 7-0 lead.
Chicago finally got on the board in the seventh when Ramirez doubled home Avisail Garcia.
Cuddyer scored on Semien's fielding error in the eighth to account for the final difference.
"At one point their pitcher is outhitting us," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "That's never a good sign. We need to be a lot better than that."
