Beckham, White Sox edge Indians
May 28, 2014 - 7:29 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Gordon Beckham homered and the Chicago White Sox took a 2-1 decision from the Cleveland Indians in the second test of a three-game set.The game had two separate rain delays, one that pushed the start time back 35 minutes and another that lasted nearly two hours.
Scott Carroll (2-3) earned the win after pitching three scoreless innings in relief of Chicago starter Chris Sale, who allowed just one walk to go along with four strikeouts over three innings.
"It was a nice job by the bullpen again," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "A good job in some unsavory circumstances."
Sale took a perfect game into the sixth in his last outing against the Yankees, striking out 10 in a 3-2 win in his first start since a stint on the disabled list.
Justin Masterson (2-4) took the loss after allowing one run over three innings before getting knocked out of the game due to the lengthy delay.
"It was a long day," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "It's a shorter day if we win. We had some opportunities, but we just couldn't push that run across."
The White Sox have taken the first two games of this set and sent the Indians to their third straight defeat and fourth in their last five games.
Adam Eaton singled to lead off the third and moved over to third on a wild pitch from Masterson. Following a groundout from Beckham that allowed Eaton to advance to third, Conor Gillaspie poked a single to center that gave the White Sox a 1-0 lead.
Then the second batch of rain came through the Chicago area and play was suspended for an hour and 58 minutes.
Coming out of the break, Michael Brantley extended his hitting streak to 13 games by giving Cleveland its first base runner of the night with one out in the fourth. Ryan Raburn followed with a single to center that put runners at the corners, but Yan Gomes popped out to Gillaspie in foul territory. Pinch- hitter Lonnie Chisenhall flied out to the warning track in right to end the inning.
Beckham knocked out his fourth homer of the year to lead off the fifth and increase the cushion to 2-0.
With runners at the corners in the seventh, Mike Aviles got the Indians on the board with an RBI groundout.
Chicago appeared to have added some insurance in the eighth, but Michael Bourn had other ideas.
Paul Konerko drove a Cody Allen offering to deep right-center where Bourn tracked the fly, then leaped at the wall hauling in the potential home run for the second out of the frame to keep the one-run deficit intact.
Ronald Belisario pitched a scoreless ninth to record his third save of the season.
