Sale shoots for another strong start versus Tribe
May 27, 2014 - 3:00 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Sale showed no rust in a return from his first ever trip to the disabled list. The talented left-hander should be less restricted on Tuesday night when the Chicago White Sox resume a three-game series with the visiting Cleveland Indians.
A flexor muscle strain in his pitching arm sent Sale to the disabled list in late April, but he returned in top form last Thursday against the New York Yankees. He retired the first 17 batters and struck out 10 of the 19 hitters he faced in a 3-2 win, yielding just one hit and walking none over six scoreless innings.
Sale threw 54 of his 86 pitches for strikes and was perfect before giving up a single with two outs in the sixth.
"I knew I was out after the sixth," he said of his pitch count. "I just tried to be efficient -- first-pitch strikes and things like that."
The 25-year-old should be allowed to go deeper tonight and brings a 4-0 mark and 1.89 earned run average on the season into the outing. That includes a win over Cleveland on April 11 in the shortest of his five starts this year as he allowed three runs over five innings.
In 19 career meetings with the Tribe, including eight starts, Sale is 3-4 with three saves and a 4.76 ERA.
Justin Masterson gets the call for the Indians on regular rest after having his last start bumped up a day. He faced off against Baltimore on Thursday on three days' rest after scheduled starter Josh Tomlin was used in relief the previous night in extra innings.
Masterson got off to a fast start versus the Orioles, taking a shutout in into the sixth inning before giving up five two-out runs in the frame and getting lifted. However, he ended up with a no-decision as Cleveland notched an 8-7 victory.
The 29-year-old righty has given up 17 runs and gone 0-2 over a current three- start winless streak, however, and is 2-3 on the year with a 5.32 ERA.
Masterson was tagged for six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and five walks in a no-decision at Chicago on April 12, but then hurled 7 1/3 scoreless innings versus the club at home on May 3.
The White Sox took advantage of some fielding troubles for the Indians to claim a 6-2 victory in yesterday's opener. Dayan Viciedo belted a three-run homer in the third inning two batters after a two-out error by Cleveland's Lonnie Chisenhall extended the inning.
Conor Gillaspie added a career-high four hits, three of them doubles, while driving in a run and scoring twice to help the White Sox snap a two-game slide.
"It was just one of those days," he said. "A couple of times they threw it right in the spot where I was looking. That's just the way it goes."
Jose Quintana pitched six innings for the win, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Tomlin struck out eight batters, but did not make it out of the sixth inning in the loss. He was charged with five runs, two earned as he was unable to bail out Chisenhall by giving up Viciedo's longball.
"A hanging curveball. I probably tried to do too much with it," said Tomlin. "It stayed up in the zone too long."
Cleveland, which has lost three of four after winning four in a row, saw Nick Swisher exit early with a knee injury, while Carlos Santana was a late scratch due to feeling ill. Both of their statuses for this game are unknown.
Cleveland won 17 of its 19 matchups with the White Sox last season, but Chicago has gone 5-3 in the series this season.
