Garcia lifts White Sox over Angels
Jul 3, 2014 - 4:34 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Pinch-hitter Leury Garcia's walk-off single in the ninth gave the Chicago White Sox a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the finale of a three-game set on Wednesday.Alejandro De Aza and Conor Gillaspie both singled off Mike Morin (2-2) to place runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Garcia then stroked a sharp grounder through the hole into left to plate the winning run.
"He had a good at-bat. He got something he could hit there," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura on Garcia. "To get it through the infield isn't always easy."
Alexei Ramirez supplied a two-run base hit and Gordon Beckham had two hits and a run scored for the White Sox, who snapped a two-game skid.
Zach Putnam (3-1) earned the win after tossing 1 1/3 innings of relief after starter John Danks gave up both runs on seven hits and tied his career-high for strikeouts with 10 over 7 2/3 innings.
Josh Hamilton and David Freese both homered for the Angels, who entered the game with seven straight wins over the White Sox. Starter Tyler Skaggs did not factor in the decision after giving up two runs on five hits with six strikeouts in 7 2/3 frames.
"It's been awhile since I had a homer. They usually come in bunches," said Hamilton. "It was good to finally see that changeup up and put a good swing on it."
Hamilton made a great play early on as he leaped at the wall in left to rob Beckham of a solo shot for the second out in the opening stanza.
The White Sox struck first in the fourth. Adam Eaton singled, Beckham doubled and Jose Abreu walked to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Ramirez singled up the middle off the mound, plating Eaton and Beckham for a 2-0 lead.
Freese got the Angels within one on a solo shot to right-center field in the top of the seventh.
The Angels evened the game in the eighth after Hamilton crushed a two-out changeup into the right-field seats.
