Indians' Tomlin one-hits Mariners

Jun 29, 2014 - 5:02 AM Seattle, WA ( - Josh Tomlin was nearly unhittable on Saturday, tossing a one-hit masterpiece as the Cleveland Indians downed the Seattle Mariners, 5-0, in the middle installment of a three-game series.

Only Kyle Seager's leadoff single in the fifth inning prevented a perfect game, as Tomlin (5-5) faced one over the minimum while recording a career-high 11 strikeouts.

"Eleven strikeouts, no walks. It was just a tremendous outing," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Tomlin's effort. "He commanded so well."

Yan Gomes hit a solo home run for the Indians, who had dropped five of their previous six games.

Roenis Elias (7-6) labored through six frames, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks for Seattle, which was riding a 6-1 stretch before being shut out for the ninth time this year.

"It was just one of those nights," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "It was a bad night all the way around."

The Indians plated two runs in their first turn at the plate, as Michael Brantley singled home Asdrubal Cabrera and scored on Carlos Santana's double.

Michael Bourn accounted for two more runs in the fifth when he doubled home Mike Aviles and raced home on Cabrera's sacrifice fly, and Gomes made it 5-0 with his ninth home run of the season in the sixth.

Tomlin received an extra day of rest after suffering his third straight loss his last time out, and the 29-year-old righty benefited tremendously.

He set down the first 12 batters he faced and seemingly got stronger as the game wore on, highlighted by striking out the side in the eighth.

Tomlin finished off the gem with a pair of harmless groundouts to first sandwiched around Brad Miller's flyout to the warning track in center.

Seventy-seven of his 111 pitches went for strikes.

Game Notes

Tomlin's previous career-best in strikeouts was eight. His only other complete game came in his rookie year on Sept. 24, 2010 against Kansas City ... Elias had won four of his previous five decisions ... Game time: 2:24.
