Tulowitzki powers Rockies past Phillies
Apr 19, 2014 - 5:41 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI as the Colorado Rockies opened a three-game set at Coors Field with the Philadelphia Phillies with a 12-1 routThe Rockies were never really threatened, putting four across in the first inning and three in the second off Phillies starter Jonathan Pettibone (0-1), who labored through four innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits.
"They came out swinging and we just set a tough tone for ourselves," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.
Charlie Blackmon and Drew Stubbs had three hits apiece and Wilin Rosario drove in a three runs to help the Rockies start their six-game homestand with an emphatic win.
"Thought we had a good approach early, made Pettibone really work," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Tyler Chatwood (1-0) needed just 88 pitches to get through seven strong innings for Colorado. The 24-year-old righty struck out six, allowing just two hits and an unearned run.
Chad Bettis and Matt Belisle each tossed perfect innings in relief.
Tulowitzki worked a 14-pitch walk to load the bags with one out in the first inning for Morneau, who slapped an opposite field ground-rule double over the wall in left field to plate two. Rosario's ground out to first scored another run and Nolan Arenado cracked a single up the middle to make it a 4-0 game.
With two outs in the second, Tulowitzki turned it into a rout with his three- run shot to center field. Two innings later, he padded the lead with an RBI double to left.
Jayson Nix hit for Pettibone in the top of the fifth and delivered an RBI single to center, plating Carlos Ruiz. Ruiz reached on an Arenado throwing error earlier in the frame and moved to second on Cody Asche's single.
RBI singles by Tulowitzki and Blackmon in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, and an RBI double from Rosario in the eighth resulted in the final tally.
