Rockies hold on to beat Dodgers
Jul 6, 2014 - 2:25 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Stubbs hit a two-run homer and scored twice and the Colorado Rockies held on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7 on Saturday.Corey Dickerson also homered for the Rockies, who snapped a five-game losing streak that included the first two games of this series.
Yasiel Puig had two hits, including an RBI double during a five-run seventh inning that trimmed the Dodgers' deficit from six runs to one.
Puig turned a fielding mistake into a defensive gem in the eighth inning after misplaying Stubbs' deep fly ball to right field by starting in on the hit.
He hustled back to make a diving catch, then gunned the ball to shortstop Hanley Ramirez to start a relay that doubled-up Wilin Rosario as he tried to take third base.
Puig had two hits, including an RBI double in a five-run seventh inning that got the Dodgers within a run after they trailed 8-2.
Jorge De La Rosa (9-6) was the beneficiary of another strong showing by the Rockies offense and earned his third straight win after giving up two runs on three hits in six innings.
The Rockies have scored 28 runs in the lefty's last three times on the hill.
"It was good timing with Jorge going out there and the tough stretch we've been in. It was a couple tough games to start the (10-game) homestand," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "We always feel good with him on the mound and he stepped up and gave us a great performance."
Dodgers righty Dan Haren (8-5) took the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Ramirez hit an RBI double off the left-field wall in the first inning to score Puig, who had led off the game with a single and gone to second on an error. Ramirez later scored on Juan Uribe's single to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.
But the Rockies tied the score in the bottom of the first, putting runners at second and third with no outs after Josh Rutledge led off with a single and Corey Dickerson hit a ground-rule double. Rutledge scored on Nolan Arenado's deep groundout to short and Dickerson came home on Rosario's single.
Colorado took a 5-2 lead with a two-out rally in the third sparked by Justin Morneau's ground-rule double. Morneau scored on Rosario's single and Stubbs followed with a two-run shot to right-center, his seventh homer of the season.
Dickerson led off the fifth with his 11th homer of the season and the Rockies chased Haren during a two-run sixth after Stubbs led off with a single and came home on Charlie Culberson's triple. Charlie Blackmon added an RBI single off Jamey Wright to make it 8-2.
"A couple balls found holes and I made a couple of mistakes," said Haren. "Dickerson hit a pretty good pitch. Besides that, not much I could do out there except do my best."
Nick Masset was charged with four runs after relieving De La Rosa in the seventh. He gave up an RBI single to Clint Robinson before Puig's double and another run scored on a passed ball. Boone Logan then surrendered an RBI hit to Ramirez.
Game Notes
LaTroy Hawkins pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 15th save ... The Rockies won for only the third time in their last 19 games ... The Dodgers fell to 13-6 in their last 19 ... Haren had eight strikeouts.
